Its official, you can no longer get an AmEx Gold Charge Card. But then given the recent uber-stupidity with Centurion, its clear to see that Platinum is the new Gold, and Centurion is the new Platinum.

The 'green' card remains though.

Is this just the UK or US as well?

Uk for the moment, but then you guys in the US have more cards than I care to mention to choose from. Maybe the idiots at AmEx thought the new Red card was the way forward, as surely nobody is intersted in cashback or points anymore - they'd much rather spend a lot and then AmEx may give some money to charity. Oh the marketing team must have had the full quota of monkeys from London Zoo modelling that value proposition or maybe they have someone on work experience doing the entire product strategy now.

The Red card seems a fairly silly idea.

Will existing Gold card holders be moved onto other products or will it remain in a "ringfenced" state?

What happens to the VS gold card offer? It doesn't seem to have been mentioned for a while on the VS site, but this link appears to still work.

And there was me all ready to bin mine?

Might have to keep it as a novelty item then

Is Amex Plat the same fee as Amex Gold was? What about my existing Gold Card? Should I keep it or 'trade it in'?

Not real smart of Amex,I remeber back when the gold card still was something,the way they are diluting the cards value just doesn't make a whole lot of sence to me,as Richard says,in the UK the blackcard is the the new platinum card,now i've been thinking the same thing for a while,but this will end up having a knock on effect to the US cards as well,lets face it,people want the black card becuase they think it brings them some prestige,well ok,but when the blackcard is as common as the platinumcard who's going to want it?

Oh well. I'll stick with my nice black, 2 miles per £, VS Gladiator card then . I might e-bay the amex gold to some antique dealer.

Hmmmmmm [:?] should I upgrade my gold to Plat? Been there before and wasn't that impressed with the service but £95 for gold is, lets be honest, a waste of money.

Has anyone ever actually paid the £95 annual fee? It was dished out fee free for the first year, and then waived as soon as you phoned up and whinged...

Oh how I love my US Gold card. Double points on gas, cell phone bills, and drug stores; 1.5 miles on travel (hotels, airfare, and cars).

I spoke to someone from the Amex Escalations Team last week (funny name for customer services but anyway thats another story) about the demise of the Gold Charge Card and they informed me (after being unaware of the fact you couldnt apply anymore for it!) that the Card offering is being refreshed by Amex (with the possibility of enhanced benefits) and so they have stopped accepting new applications until this has been finalised.

I cant imgaine the refresh is going to be that earth shattering to be honest but you never know - especially in relation to the possible encrease in membership reward points per £ spent...which they are currently upping to 1.5 rewards per £1 spent it you ask very very nicely!

That stuff is on hold last time I heard, as the groups within AmEx are being told to work together better and let each other know what they are up to. Offering this out on Gold, only goes to upset the people who have higher cards and AmEx have finally realised that this is not too clever to do.

I just cancelled mine on renewal, wasn't offered to waive the fee and tried to solicit a MR bonus but no luck with that either, still got the 20k miles for taking it out a year ago so can't complain.

I got the 1.5 MR bonus on trying to cancel my card and a bonus MR points also. I was very happy at the 20k miles for gratis!!

FWIW, I know somebody who got their Centurion after threatening to cancel, they had some pretty decent spend on it across the year though...

I had the fee waived a couple of years ago on my plat when they dragged their feet on an insurance claim.
Just got a new supplimentary card for my mum after she had shreaded her card by mistake and a new gold chip and pin charge card came through the post, so they are still being issued.

I just hate to put salt in fresh scars

Well my triple MR point just posted for my Jan and Feb 2006 charges. And could not have been a better time as I traveled for most of that period.
