The best hotel to stay in. My vote is the Ritz Carlton in Singapore.
Simply beautiful for either holiday or business. Four Seasons in Sinagpore also geogous. Shangri-La in Shanghai also amongst my favs along wiht the Mandrin Oriental in KL. Have not had a chance to see the more holiday resorts as mostly on visits for business.

My vote goes to Le Touessrok in Mauritius - absolutely beautiful setting, great rooms and fantastic food. Next best I've ever stayed in is the Burj in Dubai if only for the Hermes toiletries:D

If you are going to mention the Shangri La in Lujiazui surly the grand hyatt has to be mentioned too, if only on the grounds of height:D

If you go back to shanghai again, have a look at the hong qiao yin bin guan to stay at. Not a high rise, but set in lovely gardens, great service and you may be lucky and bump into the premier there (he always stays when visiting shanghai) or the mayor of shanghai (he lives there - he is also number 4 or so in the country's political hierarchy!). Or if you are feeling romantic try the Astor House Hotel(right on the bund). A little down on its luck these days, but it was once considered the best in asia and its old glory still shines through.

Hotels? Well...

For a holiday, the Shangri-La in Singapore (Orchard Road, not Sentosa). For business, the Raffles Plaza.

In Hong Kong, the Ritz Carlton takes a lot of beating unless you want to pay a shed load more.

In Seoul, the Coex Intercontinental is everything a good business hotel should be. One of the nicest hotels I stay in regularly.

The Leela in Bangalore is right up there with the best hotels in the world, in my opinion. Lovely but definitely not cheap!

The worst hotel I have ever stayed in has to be the Centaur in Delhi. Billed as a 5-star hotel near the airport, it was absolutely, indescribably, unutterably, unspeakably awful.

I want to put a slightly different spin on this. I would like to suggest the Hilton Short Hills for out and out value and style for money. We can all scour the books and our memories for fantastic overpriced hotels (such as the Burj in Dubai) but the Short Hills (generally priced at £100 a night) is without doubt My favourite hotel. Staff are polite and extremely helpful, parking is FREE, rooms are oversized, oh at the pillows, well lets just say I would love to steal one or two.

I booked into the hotel a few years back and it happened to be hosting a wedding. Anyway during the night things got a bit rowdy and I had to call reception. In the morning I had a personal letter from the manager apologising, they moved me, upgraded me and creditted my previous nights stay.

I cannot say enough about this hotel, it is not as magnificent as some of the hotels you have mentioned, but to me is a hotel I welcome to have a chance to stay in again.

Any others have a similar, value & style for you money hotel suggestion?

I will be in Shanghai in Sept and am staying at the Hyatt. I had a beer there in the bar at the top the last time and also a really good steak in the steak restaurant in the hotel so thats why I decised to stay there this time around. I believe its really good overall

Well, the worst hotel I've ever stayed in is here in belfast! The Europa - over priced, over hyped and just plain dirty! If anyone is ever coming here, your best bet would be the hilton, ten times better for almost half the price!

The Mandarin Oriental in KL - absolutely fantastic twin towers view room for not much more than the price of a travelodge.
The Mandarin Oriental in HK - Pure old school class, if you look here you can get an update on the renovation, including a gallery of some great nostalgic photos.

I think the two at the top of my wish list and thge Mo's in New York (columbus circle) and Chang Mai.

Either Hilton is good (head out to Templepatrick Hilton if your bringing your golf clubs!), and you get some cracking bargains too if the season is right.


Not been out Asia way yet, where most votes seem to be going - however my favourite "new" hotel would have to be the new Sydney Hilton (wasnt in the old one, but the multi-million rebuild is evident ).
Varying levels of "best" to different people/budgets too.
Outwith the larger cities which tend to be littered with good hotels, there are some gems to be found.
I was very impressed with the Radisson in Basle (so much so I booked a 2nd night , on what was meant to me a 1-night stopover driving around Europe), had booked the 1st night there because Id been to Oslo 8 months prior & was mightly impressed by the Radisson there (main one, near to bus-station).
One that wont get much mention - the "Grand Hotel" San Marino. Was there a few years ago & although the lobby etc could have done with some modernising, was a beautiful hotel with superb food, not to mention a Ukrainian waiter who was a riot.

Back to a smaller-bigger city with more choice - stayed at the Crowne Plaza in Madrid a few years back after getting a couple of free-flights out there, great choice. Due to free flights I splashed out a little extra for a junior-suite, got a massive corner-room & whilst it lacked view it had tons of character. Food was superb & the mezzanine bar overlooking lobby had a touch of elegance too it & was a great place to pass a couple of hours in the evening after dinner.
Best hotel meal? Had too many to pick out one - most memorable would be either Hilton Sydney last October or Sheraton Luxembourg (have had a couple meals here & am longing to return).

Glad to see the Captains bar will remain, my favorite spot for a cold lunch time beer in the world.

A bit of an old school selection from me, and some classic Europeans

- The Ritz, Madrid, superlative and stuff full of old Spanish Duchesses in pearls
- Grand Minerva, Rome, stunning building, great suites, amzingly discreet service, and a bar man who know how to make a good martini and remembers your face every time you enter
- The Spendido, Portofino where the only downside is negotiating the Michael Winner-likes [:o)]
- Ritz Carlton, New York ... fabulous
- The Tides, South Beach, great staff, huge rooms, top notch people watching

And some great comments from others ... would love to try many of the places I've not managed to get to yet.

I think that the best hotel has to be Sandy Lane Resort, Barbados. Well certainly the best I've stayed in. The service is discreet, yet attentive. Definately would recommend!
