... well not quite yet but
this story suggests it may happen soon.
Would compete with Virgin London-Hong Kong and with their version of UCS as well as miles and points.
But could be good for all the Great Escapaders!

I heard about this a few months ago and i think the main things that came out of it where the route could be opperated by their 767's and another point was that the flight may even go through LGW instead of LHR due to slots or something like that.
But then again i could be totally wrong

This was always in the offing since the US pulled TWOV after 9/11.
Transit through LAX is always a pain given the way the US do things (there's no way to not enter the US while in transit), and it's been steadily getting worse, I'd say.
Going via HKG is a sensible move for ANZ, and Star Alliance generally. Going via BKK or SIN would eat into loads on Star partners SQ and TG, so digging into the Oneworld domination on LHR-HKG is probably much more attractive.
I wonder if that could be the beginning of the end for the LHR-LAX segment though, or if there are enough O&D pax, and people willing to transit through LAX to support it?
It would, effectively, give ANZ a round-the-world service, as well.
Cheers,
Mike
