Hi Guys,

I'm looking at going to the Edinburgh Festival with some friends, sort of like a last vacation before we all head off to University!

Can anyone reccomend some good hotels in Edinburgh which would be good for the Festival and also not too pricey for myself and my fellow student comrades please!

Thanks for any suggestions!

If there are a group of you, you might be better off renting a flat for a week. Check out the accomodation offered section on the official Fringe website. Hotels are notoriously overpriced and difficult to come by in August.

What a brilliant website, thanks very much Pix!

I agree the hotels do seem extremely expensive.

I stayed with friends at a place called the Glenora last November. Its just beside Haymarket train station which is a really short walk to Princes Street.

We paid £120 per night B&B for a triple room, (lovely breakfast with organic produce) the hotel was completely redecorated in January but unfortunately its website is out of date and doesn't do it any justice at all.

Having stayed in LOADS of hotels in Edinburgh ( used to meet the boyfriend/husband there as it was half way between Aberdeen and Teesside) I thought the Glenora was really lovely and would recommend it to everybody.

£120 per night in November is likely to be a fair bit more in August, if available at all that centrally located ;)

I agree, it is a classic example of the capitalist ethos of 'supply and demand' ... even a Travelodge near to Edinburgh is £90 per night, two night minimum, pay on booking, non refundable during August. [:0]

And you don't get any breakfast at that. [8D]

Ah, I remember when I used to stay in the Travelodge in Edinburgh regularly for the Festival. Availability was still tight, but they didn't hike up the prices or put in any additional restrictions not in place in other months.

The non-refundable bit I can understand (with such demand for rooms, they probably don't want to be stuck with empty rooms when there would have been a queue for months), but the price hikes leave a little knot in my stomach. Wonder what extra they provide for the 30% increase?

Last year we left it very late to book and ended up in The Links Hotel by The Bruntsfield Links, I think we paid about 70GBp in the middle of the festival for a double which is pretty good. I was a bit concerned at check in, but actually it was fine, and did a good brekkie. During the festival you're going to be out and about most of the time so you do only really need a bed.

In my student days we used to stay in the halls of residence, I think these are now about 40GBP or 50GBP per night.

You never know but if you don't ask you don't get ;)

The hotels website has now been updated http://www.glenorahotel.co.uk/
