Hand luggage rules to be tightened?

According to The Daily Telegraph, airline passengers face a crack down on the amount of hand luggage they take on board.

The guidelines, due to come into force during the summer, mean that BAA will ask airlines to enforce their own rules more strictly.

From posts on this board, and FT - the rules seem to cause more problems to US travellers, than they do to UK pax. [}:)];)

It's quite odd really, some airlines encourage their pax to take as much as they can onto the aircraft and squeeze it in, whilst others want you to check it in.

Hit a bit of turbulance and I know I wouldn't want to be sitting under one of those bins with someones trolley case in it!

If airports could get bags out onto the carousel quicker maybe more people would check bags in (unless they paid per bag to do this). One of the joys of flying into LCY is that quite often your bag will be making its appearance just as you arrive at baggage reclaim (as opposed to Schiphol where the wait for the baggage has been longer than the flight before - making me late for work).

When many people pack their hand luggage (I am sometimes guilty of this) they seem to follow a "what if" policy and take anything and everything allowing for any possibility, resulting in a large amount of hand luggage relative to their checked luggage.

Passengers are taking more and more hand baggage now. I believe mainly because of the low cost airlines (esp now Ryanair and flybe are charging for each item you check in for the hold). The larger size and increase in the number of bags for each passenger has been causing problems at security checkpoints. This affects all airports, not just BAA. I know of at least one other airport group which will be launching a campaign for the summer to crack down on the size and number of hand baggage bags.

Actually, the allowances BAA are "imposing" are higher than VS' current ones anyway:

VS: 9in x 14in x 22in
BAA: 10in x 18in x 22in

So, technicall, no problem? [:?]

OK...

VS: 22.86cm x 35.56cm x 55.88cm
BAA: 25.4cm x 45.72cm x 55.88cm

I don't think it is anything to do with what the rules are... it is how rigidly they are enforced that will make the difference... especially if the weight limits (6kg / 13lbs for Y and W) are adhered to.

VS doesn't seem to make an extra allowance for laptops, like some airlines do.
