The cost of a UK passport is set to increase from £34 to £45 for a ten year adult passport. Apparently this will be the "most secure ever produced by the UK".

Mailed my application a week past Thursday, and it came back in under a week. It was also a new Biometric one.

This after I added a note in the application requesting a Biometric one, they called me to say that at the moment they're still issuing the old style so there's only a 50% chance of getting a Biometric Passport. [:0]

I did the application on - line, and it was processed in Newport.

Can't fault the service

This increase is bad, second time in 10months, I've got 2 to buy later this year, so its going to cost £132 instead of the £80-odd it would of cost us mid last year. I know security is important but this seems injust to me [V]

Surely this is just the same as other commodities increasing in price during the year, British Gas prices for example. And passports do last for 10 years, so that makes it £6.60 per year (or about 55p per month) per passport - not bad value surely

Surely, it's simply yet another greedy tax? Cost has not doubled within a very short time. Yes, I know there are 'reasons' - aren't there always - but nonetheless, hard to see how such a hike can be justified. My passport still has about 8 years to run, idread to think what the renewal cost for that will be....

As i said in another thread, the chinese equivilent of £1.50 and dealt with within a week by the local police station for a chinese passport.......

I get your point, but this new rise equates to a 57% rise since December last year, and that is OTT by anybody's standard, even 10 years worth of 2/3%inflation wage increases does not cover this increase let alone any future one's [V]

It's a steep increase all right, and it seems unfair to hit us with two so near to each other. The old veil of "security" is being used of course, but yet again no one has clarified exactly how, when, where that extra "security" is going to save us.

I'm about to renew mine anyway, and suggest anyone who can before October does so. Remember they will tack on up to 9 extra months if you renew early.

If it's 9 months or less until your passport is due for renewal, then you can renew your passport early and they will "add on" the leftover validity on your old passport onto your new one. If there's more than 9 months left, they will add the maximum 9 months on, so you will have a new passport lasting 10 years and 9 months.

Because of the significant increase in the price, it's probably financially sound for anyone with 2 or 3 years left on their passport to renew before October (haven't done the maths so can't be exact), but I doubt many will bother once you factor in the hassle of sorting out photos etc.
