Less Competition on JFK Route

UA have just binned it!

Related to this schedule change, United will sell its New York-London route authority to Delta Air Lines subject to U.S. Department of Transportation approval and certain other closing conditions. Delta will use this route authority to fly between JFK and London's Gatwick Airport. This route authority sale will result in United discontinuing its JFK-London Heathrow service at the end of October.

Wow, thanks a lot for that Paul[^]

That's good news for VS but not for those who, for example, are FFs with UA[:?]

What it also means is that there is no longer ANY direct service from London to New York (including New Jersey!) within the whole of Star Alliance. [:0]

... Might screw up a few RTW's [:?]

The *A website still shows a UA flight from LHR to JFK in December. I guess *A RTWs will have to go with US through LGW.

Well there are the codeshared SQ flights on VS metal but I assume that they cannot be combined in a Star RTW.

on UAL you could fly LHR-IAD and then fly up after a few days.
seems like UAL could make better use of the LHR slots and the 777

Well this will mean less competition on the JFK-LHR sector but since DL is snapping up the JFK slots and going to LGW 3 times a day so overall i think that adds another daily on the JFK-LON sector

Was just thinking, you don't actually see or hear much in the way of advertisments from either DL or US this side of the pond. There are adverts for both UA and AA but I've never seen anything from the other two american carriers. [:?]

Hmm wouldnt say less competition in reality though- after all DL are starting LGW-JFK up and will be increasing it to 3 times daily (cutting lgw-atl to 2 times daily from next year but increasing that flight to a 777). So the overall competition on LON-NYC has remained the same. With the introduction of Eos and Maxjet on these routes, one can argue that the overall competition has increased greatly in the last 18months although obviusly it has decreased from LHR.

Good bit of business from UA- DL have paid for the right to operate the route and now must pay UA everytime they fly the route as well. [oo]

But it would be less competition on the JFK-LHR sector for VS but over all on JFK-LON theres more competition cause of DL new 3 daily
