It seems that Aer Lingus is now charging to check in baggage on short haul flights link

Short sighted to say the least,with EI pulling out of One World and now charging for baggage you may as well fly EZ.

And with Ryan Air doing the same how much longer before we see all short haul carriers ( and not those we would traditionally label as the "low cost carriers")charging for baggage??[:(!]

I doubt easyJet will charge you for checking in hold luggage. Each person is allowed to check-in baggage all adding up to 50kg for free; 20kg per piece of hold luggage, followed by an excess fee of £5 per kg.

Don't forget Ryanair charge for hold luggage because of their old worn-out excuse: "By doing this we can pass on the savings to you meaning lower fares*"

*That's before taxes and charges get added on

yea i saw that the other day. Its bad enough paying 20 euros for the golf clubs but now add on another 8 euro plus. B@st@rds

Yup! Saw it. It comes as no surprise given the re-invention to LCC

Can't! EZ are pulling out of ORK at the end of September and in any case flew to LGW and EI fly to LHR. Incidentally there has been an on-going rumour that EI is to pull out of LHR. I sincerely hope not as that is a major feeder to other destinations

Well, without the OW connecting traffic to keep them there, maybe it wouldn't be surprising - though where would they relocate to? If they go to Stansted, they just go head to head with Ryanair, which seems pointless. Maybe they would go to Gatwick, but is that significantly cheaper than Heathrow?

Would BA start flying LHR-DUB/CRK/SNN instead? Or would LHR-DUB be left in the hands of BMI, who can't seem to fight their way out of a wet paper bag these days (yet more crazy British airline mis-management).

As for the whole paying for luggage thing, why would you do this - you have a great USP against Ryanair there, and instead you're on copycat tactics, rather than exploiting that USP?

Sorry! I meant on the Cork run. EI couldn't pull out of the DUB-LHR run as it is their busiest and presumably their most profitable.

Well, as long as people don't go "Hang on, apart from flying into LHR, how different is this to FR?", yes, DUB-LHR is probably a moneyspinner for now - but, what if BA start up DUB-LHR once EI are out of OW?

Would be a shame if the CRK flights do go - how well do they usually load?

I wonder if BA or BMI would start up LHR-CRK if EI give it up?

They usually load full or nearly full as a high proportion of the passengers are connecting through LHR. The same aircraft shuttles to and from London 4 times a day and I have never seen it empty or anything approaching empty. In the summer timetable there is an additional flight in the middle of the day which tended to be light at the beginning of the season but not any more. However this was cut back to weekends from July this year, probably to free up an aircraft for the extra routes started by EI, but to my mind it shows that Aer Lingus regard Cork as the poor relation [V]
