Where are you based ?

If you are anywhere near Victoria SW1 there is a great bureau in victoria street called Thomas Exchange, its affiliated to Amex........ cant beat the rates anywhere (and ive tried) dont go at lunctime as there is always a queue out of the door.

Marks and Spencers always seem to have competitive rates.

Using a Nationwide Current account debit card to draw out of a foreign ATM gives you the best rate of exchange ;)

Travelex online guarantee the best rates, commission free. Just pick it up at the airport.

However, as also recommended, a Nationwide debit or credit card is a good move too - and now a Post Office Credit card, as they don't add any foreign exchange loading.

We (as in Nationwide as that's where I work) in addition to not adding any comission on the exchange rate also give the commercial rate of exchange and do not charge for ATM withdrawals with the debit card. So I just take my card and draw from the ATM when I arrive secure in the knowledge of getting the highest exchange rate possible ;) No need to visit any foreign exchanges [y]

But that wasn't a blatent advertisment on you part was it ;)

Never mind... I'm off to open a nationwide account next time I'm back home [:o)]

I generally use my debit cards in ATM's but usually get hit with a fixed handling fee, so don't take out a little and often, BUT I have always felt the ATM method did get the best exchange rate, and of course you generally only take what you need, so none leftover at the end of your travels....

It does also mean (crossing topics to "The Tipping Thread") that I never have any local currency for tipping when i first arrive in a place.
