Boeing have announced the end of production of the passenger 747. Pity! I love that plane [:#]

This isn't the end of the 747 in passenger format.

All Boeing have announced is that the last 747-400 has rolled off the production line.

747's will contine in passenger config as the 747-800 series in 2009/2010...:D

Yep, now all we need is for Alitalia to order some 748's and we may see them in VS colours in a couple of years.

Almost slightly surprised that VS didn't try and strike up some deal with Boeing to take up those last few production slots that Philippines didn't take. It would seem like such an SRB thing to do - but then, it looks like the hulls for the last five were never started, so it wasn't like there was much to bargain with.

I know VS said that they have changed their strategy recently about airframes, with the A380 being delayed and some A346 orders being put on ice, and have extended the leases on their earlier 744 airframes. I wonder if they hope to pick up some more 744s between now and 2012?

A real shame there will be no more -400s made, as they are such great aircraft. I'm excited to see what the -8 will be like.

Alan-

The only problem is, will VS part with the money to do so?

744 are in pretty high demand for conversion to freighters, I just don't know if VS will step up money wise.

Also the 744 may be to much aircraft for VS at this point, I don't want to start a whole new "which new aircraft thread" but I get the feeling that VS is looking for a deal on a 250 type aircraft.

That my gut feeling also for the short-term.

A VS 748 would be pretty amazing for the future though. The 747 is what I historically associate VS with, and it would be great for that association to continue with the new model in a few years time...:D

Get that order placed VS...[:p]

Not sure how new this is, but a cool video about the 747-8 on the Boeing site:
