US entry rules set to change

I read somewhere, now can't find the link, that currently proposed legislation in the US Congress (likely to pass) will require airlines to send advance passenger data 48hrs ahead of a flight. The change intended to put a stop to planes being turned around mid flight ...

Sound sensible, but then I realised that four times this year I've booked to go to New York with less than 48hrs notice, so it may put a stop to that. Anyone else in the same boat?

I would potentially be buggered if that rule came in. [n]

The article in the ST made the point that there would be provision for last minute travel.

Interesting I wonder how that would be managed ... I do wish they would offer some sort of frequent traveller checks, prescreening or whatever, to speed through those of us who are always on the move.

But wouldn't that make the whole system a bit pointless? Or are they just going to say "send the APD for the guys you have the information for already" to get that processed so the other stuff can be done quicker.

Do you mean the kind of advance passenger info you provide online with VS? If so, what happens with airlines who don't provide online check in and flight management? I'm flying with Maxjet in a few weeks, and as far as I can see, there's no provision for supplying that info online, which means they can't ask the questions before check in - which isn't 48 hours early.

Claire, these measures won't be coming into effect until sometime in 2008 so it won't affect your trip.

Also booked within 48hrs before departure on many occassions.
Pretty soon, the US government will be doing the job of the terrorsists for them if it continues to practice inconvenience.

If Rudolph Giuliani gets elected, he wants every foreign visitor to have to carry a biometric card containing a photo and fingerprint data.

He is quoted as saying, "If you don't have that card, you get thrown out of the country".

Well, that's one big "Welcome to America", isn't it? [ii]

Kind of takes me back to my history lessons for 1939-1945... [:?]

Excellent idea, we should have the same here, but I suppose the liberal looneys would scream blue murder about it
