24 hour strike at LHR & LGW 7 Sep 07

Maintenance workers at Heathrow and Gatwick airports are to stage a 24-hour strike next month over a pay dispute.

According to this BBC report, if the strike does go ahead, there will be no disruption to travellers, as the strikers will be replaced by temporary staff and managers.

If this is the case, I have to ask the question - What is the point of going on strike? [?]

Somebody provides a security service at LGW/LHR? Really?

'GMB members working for Emcor, which provides maintenance, cleaning and security services at the airports, will walk off the job on 7 September. '

But again, it looks like a universal 3% payrise. It's like deja vu!

Thanks,
Richard

As a passenger who funds such "security services", I'm not happy in the slightest for them to be given ANY increase, let alone above inflation.

"Security" at the airports has gone from bad to ridiculous in a very short space of time. The operation as a whole, as well as the staff themselves IMHO. LHR's staff quite often make the US fiascos at airports look like a slick operation [n]

Shouldn't we heare over the next few days if VS cabin crew have accepted the negotiated offer or, have rejected it and next step is a strike?

The current rumour is that 92% voted no, Alan.

God it's being dragged out a bit isn't it? It nearly takes as long to get served on some flights![}:)]

It's actually a pretty good percentage coming from VS..when I ask them something 99% of the time they say no to me.

That was my inital reaaction too - but they're a little late with it, as it almost always coincides with the 6 week school summer holidays.

Maybe they just got their dates wrong....[}:)]
