Indian Holiday Advice

So, here I am in Mumbai, and looking like to be here for another couple of months.
I'm hoping MrsPVG will join me when I return in December, and stay through Christmas.

Anybody got any good suggestions of where to go over the xmas period in India other than Goa?

Goa is first on my options list BUT we are unlikely to be booking anything until the first week of December, and I've been reliably advised that Goa needs to be booked up plenty early enough.

So any other good options? AND I don't want City!

Down the coast from Chennai are some nice beach resorts, such as the Taj Fisherman's Cove. However they also get very booked up so I think at this late stage you'd be very lucky.

A little further south of that is Pondicherry (or Puducherry as it's recently become in honour of its original Indian name). Beautiful French influenced town with nice guest houses and a couple of hotels - take a look it's a great place with French street names and speaker (it was a French free port until about 1955 I think) - however, the beach in town isn't fantastic.

Is Pondicherry close to Kerala? An Indian friend of mine used to holiday there with family very regularly (in Varkala by the beach at the Taj hotel IIRC) and has always claimed it to be very unspoilt and slightly off the beaten track. See Kerala Tourism.

Thanks,
Sarah

Another option might be Cochi - the waterways and inlets have several nice hotels and its close by for tourism in Kerala.

wow...I've been searching the suggestions on the internet - It all seems so far removed from the chaos and filth that is Mumbai.

Checked with a friend and he confirms that Alchol is not too easy to come by, some Hotels serve it, but there are not many (if any) bars around[n]

But it is an absolutely beautiful place to visit (compares to Goa 15-20 years ago).
