What is the verdict for the Shangri-la chain of hotels?
Not stayed in one before but have been looking at choosing them for a stay in Asia, notably the Hong Kong/Bangkok ones.
Anybody here stayed in a Shangri-la? If so, what do you think? Would you recommend them as a chain?
Ive heard some good reviews but wasnt sure how they compare to other chains?

I stayed at the Bkk Shangri-la three years ago over Christmas.
We had a room in the Krungthep Wing overlooking the river and found the total experience excellent.
The Krungthep Wing is totally seperate from the main hotel with its own check-in, lounge, bar etc. It was also much less crowded than the main building and during our stay seemed to be less than 50% full
The rooms were very spacious with an oversized bathroom with a seperate shower cubicle. A nice feature in the bathroom were the heated morrors whicj meant that they never "steamed up".
We ate in a few of the restaurants all of which were very good, but our favourite was Angelini - the Italian restaurant which was as good as it gets.
Another advantage of the "Shangi" in Bkk is that it is right beside a BTR transport station which means fast connections to Sukhumvit Road and other central areas
The location of the hotel by the river gives a great feeling of space which is sadly lacking in most other hotels in the city centre.
Threre are 3 swimming pools, one of which is at the Krungthep Wing and is much quieter than the other two.
Over all we could not find fault with this hotel and we highly recommend it.
Other hotels in Bkk worth considering are the Peninsula - across the river from the Shangi, or if you want an hotel near the centre of town try the Sheraton Grande on Sukhumvit.
Hope this is of some help.

I stayed in ordinary guest room in Kuala Lumpur Shangri La 2 years ago and the hotel was superb - a nice blend of east and west. Generally in Asia they are very highly thought of.

Hi,
Does any one know how many miles per stay at the Shangri-la ? ( The VS website did not state it unlike all the other hotels)
Thanks.

Hi. Was fortunate enough to stay in 2 Shangri-La's on last years round the world trip. Firstly the one in Singapore was very impressive, with the immense and opulent lobby, the ultra friendly staff (which football team do you support? Ah, I am Liverpool, so you are my enemy!!) and concierge treatment (suggestions, chauffeur car hir, Tea at raffles etc). Rooms were modern and large, with a nice garden view. Food was OK too, and overall quite reasonable. Would reccommend it for sure.
The second was a newly acquired S-L from ANA, in Sydney. The views clinched it for me, overlooking the bridge and opera house. Room was smaller, but well equiped and modern. Spacious hotel, not far from everything, restaurant food good too, though as you would expect, more expensive than Singapore.
All in all, 2 good experiences.

Great feedback guys, im getting some quotes in from Travelbag, so hopefully they will be able to do mea a good deal.
Planning Shangri-la stays at Bangkok, Kuala lumpur and Sydney, so nice to hear good things about the latter two.
Jaguarpig, im staying in the Pen at Honkers, so yes you are probably right, once ive tasted it i probably will want to do it all over again! LOL
Ive joined their members club so we will hopefully get all of the benefits of Classic members during our stay, which will be nice

Its got to be done though hasnt it! I wanted to stay on the island myself rather than Kowloon, but as im only there for 3 nights it would be rude not to do the Pen! Plus, my Honkers travel book has a whole page dedicated to the hotel, so that kinda swayed me!!
