Where to stay in Singapore

Having booked myself into the Royal Peacock in Singapore's Chinatown, I've since been reading some less than possitive reviews on sites such as tripadvisor. Has anybody stayed here recently and/or know whether it's any good? Or does anybody have any alternative suggestions (60-70/night)?

Thanks

I would be loath to cancel reservations just because of bad reviews on tripadvisor. Like all internet forums [:D][:I] its accuracy is sometimes open to question. [:w]

having said that, the reviews on on Expedia aren't great either. [:?]

We are off to SIN at the end of this month and from what I read about rocketing hotel prices there, I think you may be lucky to get anything decent in your price range - I stand to be corrected though.

We are staying at a Sheraton on Scott's Road.

I agree that hotel prices are always pretty high in Singapore.
The old faithful for the budget conscious used to be the Phoenix Hotel on Somerset and Orchard. But I believe that closed for refurbishment in July.
It too had varied reviews, mostly due to its tired state. But if the sheets are clean and the AC works, what more can you want in Singapore - you'll only be there for sleeping, and don't worry about the Hotel Food, there's so much to eat elsewhere.

Try directly on some of the big brand websites - sometimes you can hit it lucky and get a bargain price.

I recommend thiswebsite for ease of searching for hotels in any budget in Singapore.

If you (or anyone else) needs a hotel fairly close to the airport (for example as a 1 night stop-over), I can suggest the Changi Village Hotel. The rates are very reasonable (I paid ~£80 a night) and most of the rooms are quite nice. It's the nearest hotel (still a 15 minute drive mind) to the airport and offers free transport to/from the airport.

They do also provide a free shuttle bus to Orchard Road too, although I'm not sure how far away this is.

Regards

Thanks for the replies.

Sorry I've not replied sooner, but the laptop charger died on Monday evening and the office blocks v-flyer [V].

I'll check these out over the weekend and report back on results later.

Cheers

If you are flying SQ beyond Singapore then you can take advantage of the SQ Singapore Stopover hotel package which includes return airport transfers (minibus) and hotel accomodation from as little as GBP34 per room per night (cheapest category A). The Copthorne Orchid is the most popular in this category and availability is limited so book as early as possible. The room rates are usually 3-4 times the equivalent in local currency.
