Not too long now till our trip to Barbados - Just wondering if any fellow V Flyers have recently stayed at the Sandy Lane property. We got a cracking deal so had to go for it.

To be honest, I'd rather spend the day in Hull with Neil than going to Sandy Lane. If I won a holiday there, I'd give it to someone that I don't like. [:w]
It just has an air of absolute pretentiousness about it.

I'm not a fan of Sandy Lane - or, at least, of the type of people it tends to attract - but it's got to be a great deal better than Hull, surely. Or does getting to spend quality time with Neil sweeten the deal for you Richard?
I've not stayed there, but we've spent our last 4 sojourns to Barbados about half a mile down the coast. It's on a nice stretch of the west coast with great restaurants relatively close by (The Cliff and Tides are particularly good). And the restaurants in the hotel itself are supposed to be outstanding.
The down side? Well, just be aware that it's a favourite haunt of Michael Winner; need I say more...?

In the past we have stayed at the Royal Pavillion but as its my wifes 40th we decided to give it a blast. We went for dinner with the kids last year and ate in the 'casual' restaurant that was superb. We found the place not at all' snobby2 but in fact very casual and seemed to be a seriously beautiful property. Staff we found on our 'visit ' were so nice and actually great fun. As for the comment regarding Hull, you really do need to get out more. Anyway thanks for your comments guys - I think regarding thr Sandy Lane there is a lot of old 'stigma' attached regarding some of the 'tossers' that go when the hotels charges a min of 3000 usd per night. I can only imagine the amount of bullshit going on when each person is trying to out do each other demanding 'SERVICE' - Thankfully we are there when its 'off season' as whej we visited the property last year. Anyway we are there for my wifes 40th ( 9 of us in total) and will make out own fun.

The place reminds me of a prison from the outside - The external wall is excessively high and covered in black plastic and wrecks the local area.
Green fees for their course are a P#*s take also. [V]
Not my cup of tea. [:)]

Obviously not famous enough. Can you be a tad more specific?

I think that is the problem with Sandy Lane, the preconception. I havent been there but I am put off the place because of the clientel i have seen and heard in Barbados or the LGW CH - and of course, there is Michael Winner.
I would love to hear a report from a V-Flyer though. A good, candid report on what the place is really like.
Thanks,
Sarah

I'm staying in Royal Westenmoreland fairly soon and have never visited the Island before, so without wishing to hijack this thread, any must do's for the area? I think it's pretty close to Sandy Lane.

Ooh, you thread hijacker you...
Eat at The Cliff (it's expensive, you need to book in advance, but it's worth it) and try Tides, both a stone's throw (or a short taxi ride if you prefer) from your digs. And try out a place called Groots - again not far away - that may be a pretty basic joint but does cracking fish and chips (mushy peas, HP sauce, the mashings).
Do a trip on a catamaran - there's loads to choose from but, short of chartering your own, Cool Runnings really can't be beat. They do a nice lunch onboard, have a 'free' bar (don't worry, it's not one of those awful 'booze cruises') and they stop off for some decent snorkelling,
Hire a car and get lost (you will, but not for long) and if you want to try something ever so slightly different, sign up for Ted's Tour - he's a white Barbadian who shunned his family's hotel business, bought himself a bus and now takes tourists round the island he loves three times a week. And he takes rum with him in case anyone gets thirsty...
It's a great island, you'll love it. And, looking at the dates you're out there, if you just so happen to bump into a rum addled British guy who looks a tad like me, don't tell anyone on here - they think I'm a sober character and it would ruin my V-Flyer cred...

Try out a wonderful little place called...St Lucia..far better place to stay..
Ok to be nice, if you want a fun day out contact Stephen Tryhane at Thriller Turtle & Shipwreck Tour if you feel like taking a little snorkel tour.
Personal experience was great and reviews on Cruise Critic echo this.

Do try to visit The Flower Caves at the far north of the island. Make sure you have a cold drink in the little cafe with time to chat for 5 mins with the old lady who runs it.
Take a business card with you, it will help hold the place up.You'll know what I mean when you get there. The views from the cliff tops are breathtaking & the ride to get there is very pleasant.

Groots - thata the place I was thinking of - Thanks Pond. Yes I agree the Cliff is fantastic place to eat - Also a must is a place called Lonestar thats not far from you as well - Another fine restaurant and a great setting - There is a restaurant down near the Hilton called Aqua that has an amazing setting - book in advance and ask for a table near the edge - Its on the Atlantic side of the islad so the sea is much rougher and its jsut amazing sitting there watching the waves nearly coming up onto your table - Enjoy - Also try Bajan Blue in the Sandy Lane (great excuse to go into the property) but its not expensive - great menu and to have a drink afterwards in the MOnkey bar is also worth it.

Tides is really good, yes. Been 5 or 6 times and they've only let us down once (Cliff Richard was in with a large party and the service went out the window).
I agree that Lone Star is a craker - I'd forgotten about that. They're great with kids too. And we'll have to give Aqua a go, that's one we've not tried yet.
