Southwest Airlines - customers of size

Just been reserving flights on their website and I noticed they have guidelines for 'customers of size'. This involves having to reserve two seats if you cannot fit into a seat without raising the arm rests. Is this a new thing or have SW had this for a while?

It was discussed at great length and with some very emotive views in this old thread.

I have locked the old thread, so that if the debate is to be resurrected, it can take place in this new one.

I hope to see this thread swell to the size of a morbidly obese SW passenger. Let the comments begin!

My take: charge 'em. Being pressed against someone's moist, adipose fat is revolting for any length of time, particularly if I have paid for it.

And what if someone so large fell on you in turbulence?
