There is a quite interesting, if somewhat basic article about getting upgrades on flights here on Money Saving Expert.

There won't be much there that regular V-Flyer readers are not aware of, and there are some factual errors within it.

Seems the threads have become quite heated and plenty of posts removed.

In the hotel business, where I work, upgrades are somewhat of a holy grail for guests. And of course when it happens once it's never accepted graciously, just demanded as a right for the next stay, so we're very wary about doing them. Sometimes operationally it's necessary. Everyone asks for them, especially (sorry) pesky travel agents.
So I ask 'Do you think there is something about the room that you've booked that you won't be happy with. Would you like to have a look at some larger alternatives...' HAHA. I'm evil.

Interesting - I never ask for an upgrade in a hotel, although fairly frequently I am offered it at check in (perhaps 1 in 5 times). I don't carry any hotel cards, although more often than not they have my details on the computer.

I never ask for an upgrade on a plane either. If I did I'd be sitting in the pilot's lap. [:w]

Hilarious. Any Reverends on V-Flyer please note to put this on your next booking, apparently you might be upgraded ... now UC full of nuns and priests would be a sight to behold, with a dry bar by the end of the flight to boot!

Oh and where does AA put its premium economy seats, apparently they're 38' of goodness [;)].

Like the article says, if you want to secure your Business/First Class seat then buy one.

A friend of mine who works at the airport had a guy demand an upgrade at the gate, my friend said what reason should I give you a £3 seat when you have only paid £200??? He soon went and sat down....[:o)]
