Singapore - advice wanted

Hi

because I'm a bit of a hoilday saddo, am already thinking about next Summer's holiday, and am thinking about going to Thailand, I know its wrong time of year weather wise, but there's no other time we can go for two weeks, school holidays have to be taken into account. Anyway, I digress, am thinking we could fly to Singapore with SIA, I assume that would be on new huge plane, spend some time in Singapore then fly on to Thailand.

So what I'm asking of all you well travelled folk, is Singapore somewhere you could stay up to 4 nights? Is there plenty to do, and how do you think teenage boys, they'll be 18 and 14, probably last time 18 year old will come away with family before he flies the nest, will get on there.

Also, we usually fly VS Premium, SIA don't have Premium but any views on the A380 Economy would be appreciated.

Cheers guys

Lynne

Hi Lynne

Starting off with the A380, it is at the moment on only 1 or 2 of the flights per day although this will change as SIA receive more A380s. Their website is pretty good at telling you which aircraft will be flying the route on any particular day. One of my mum's friends has just returned from Singapore on the A380 and says that it was much more spacious than on an 747 and that the new KrisWorld was top notch. She sat on the lower deck but ventured upstairs and said that the upper deck seemed a lot quieter than downstairs.

As for Singapore itself - this is just personal opinion but I think I could only manage 2 nights max - it's a bit too sterile and clean cut for my liking. However, if you have never been before there's enough to do and see to fill up 4 days such as Sentosa, Chinatown and Little India for starters.

Hi Lynne,

This thread has plenty of recommendations of things to do in Singapore which may help (there is another post linked inside that one too). I'd think if this was your first time there you could easily fill up four days, and if all else fails there is always the giant SunTec city mall for shopping and the hotel pool [:)]

I am eager to go back to Singapore myself [y]

Thanks,
Sarah

Easily enough to do for 4 days: Sentosa, Night Safari, Chinatown, Little India, Clark Quay, Shopping, Raffles... Personally I could fill half the time revisiting the Hawker Centres and eating! [:w] Just be prepared for the humidity.

As Jonathan says the SQ website is very good for telling which aircraft are scheduled to fly which routes. I'd avoid the 747s if at all possible, the newer economy cabins are a big improvement.

Oh yes! You've not lived until you have sat on an upturned blue crate eating the most delicious and freshly cooked unidentified meat or noodles imaginable! [:D]

Thanks,
Sarah

I don't think I have ever visited a safer city - you could easily let your two boys do their own exploring. There is the huge Suntec City Technology mall that is fantastic if they like their gadgets.

Thanks everyone, knew I'd get some good advice from you all!

Singapore does sound great, you have really whet my apetite to go now.

Richard - my sons are teenage boys, course they like their gadgets, no doubt they'll grow up to be young men who still like their gadgets, after all they are male!

They also love noodles, so that's a bonus, and one of them is quite into bling, might be able to find some fake rolex that'll break as soon as we get home!

I am particularly interested that you say it is a safe city, always something to take into account.

Thanks once again, will do some flight searches now.

Lynne

Singapore Airlines do a really good value stopover package which is purchased in conjunction with flights via Singapore to other destinations (such as Thailand) - generally they are better prices than tour op rates and you get free transfers and a free sightseeing package. see here http://www.singaporeair.com/saa/en_UK/c ... /index.jsp

Also, if you try somewhere like Koh Samui (most places on the East of the peninsular) you will have good weather in the Summer .

Thailand is FAB - enjoy

Having done both SimLim square and Suntec City, I'd recommend SimLim Square over suntec. It's a 7 min walk from orchard road, across the road from little india and better

SimLim is a Mecca for computer geeks. The top couple of floors are an Aladdin's cave of cables, connectors and circuits!
