Ryanair gunning for Aer Arann

Ryanair, the low cost airline that is dead against government subsidies (oh yes it is!) is challenging a decision to award the Knock - Dublin PSO contract to it's smaller rival, Aer Arann, in a move that smacks of 'It's not fair!'

I think calling Aer Arann a 'subsidy junkie' stinks.

These constant attacks, along with O'Leary's naming of rivals he expects to fail does actually make me question just how secure Ryanair's position is.

For once I can actually see their point though, of course all the facts have not come to light yet, but if it the same airport, same schedule and same fares being charged (including all the Ryan air addon's) then they have a pretty valid point.

Ryanair didn't in fact tender for the route in the first place!
It was originally won by CityJet, who then said they couldn't operate the link, so it was awarded to the runner up, Aer Arann. (When CityJet said they couldn't operate the link, Ryanair then got involved, offering to operate the route - bypassing the tender process!)

RyanAir in my opinion are the worst airline in the world - I feel ashamed to know they are Irish owned

Ryanair - Never used them, never will, I'd rather walk than put money in their pockets.

I didn't say a thing.

FWIW, I've said it before and I'll say it again, much as I dislike Michael O'Leary and his propensity for shooting his mouth off. I've yet to have a bad flight on Ryanair. It's all very well the likes of Miopyk and others saying they've never used them and never will, never is a long, long time and there may be a time when you are d*mn glad they're there. As far as I am concerned, if there are some places I need to get to I have absolutely no choice but to use them.

With regard to Knock-Dublin route, I could easily see Ryanair muscling in and knocking out(no pun intended) Aer Arann and then later withdrawing the route as it is unprofitable. Pure dog in the manger tactics! [V]

Aer Arann and Ryanair co-exist here in Cork, especially on the Cork-Dublin route. While the Ryanair flight is faster Aer Arann score as they have recently signed a deal with Aer Lingus to interline from ORK to the US routes. This is a major plus especially as they don't have the punitive baggage limits that Ryanair do.

Incidentally Ryanair are pulling the Prestwick-Cork route citing excessive airport charges. The route is being taken over by - yes, you've guessed it! Aer Arann!!

You're right of course no one can say they would 'never' do something but in this case it is highly likely that I won't. I know people who have used them and I have to say that a high percentage have reported problems with service and customer care. Two of these were quite serious and in both cases people were affectively abandoned abroad and left to make their own alternative travel arrangements to get home.

On this basis and the fact that O'Leary clearly has complete contempt for his customers I think my resolve will hold true. Of course it helps that I have no desire to travel to most of the places that Ryanair service as I prefer to travel to an airport close to the destination I'm going to and if that changes I would certainly seek any alternative before I would ever contemplate using them.

Oh, by the way I would 'never' buy a Lada, run in a marathon or take a holiday in North Korea either[:p]
