In about 10 days time I am flying over to LGW to meet up with friends who are flying in from Rome and overnighting there before catching the following day's US Airways flight to CLT. We are staying in the Holiday Inn at LGW (their choice)and are trying to make plans for that night. The husband, who brews his own beer and loves sampling different kinds, is anxious to visit a pub and his wife, who will have dragged him around every winery in Umbria, has indicated that it is a stipulation of their short stay in the UK. Ideally it should also serve food. I should add that we are also hoping to meet up with friends who live in London just alongside Tower Bridge.
My thought (and that of our London friends) is that we should head into London and head for a good pub there, of which our friends would know plenty. My American friend has sourced a pub on-line in Horley called the Black Horse which has a 4.6/10 rating from 8 reviews. Has anyone else any other suggestions to make for that evening?

If the weather is nice the Old Thameside Inn is pretty good. They've a decking area on the Thames beside the Golden Hinde in dock. Literally 5 mins from London Bridge station past Southwark Cathedral and Borough Market. If the weather isn't suitable for outdoors then don't bother. (I know it isn't near LGW but there is a direct train service!) [:)]

I would agree to go to a London pub. Near London Bridge the Market Porter is the best bet for Real Ales and the like, although it can be very busy. Last time I was there they had about eight different types! Not sure if they do food. My favourite pub in London is near Farringdon, it's called The Jerusalem Tavern, and they do food... sometimes. It's closed at weekends though.

If it's Horsham though, then The Forresters Inn seems to get good reviews, as does The Hornbrook.

Thanks for both suggestions. I'm not too bothered about London pubs because i trust our friends there implicitly. What I am really asking is whether there is any place worth going to near LGW

The Copthorne always works for me, IMHO the pubs around LGW suck now, nowhere near as good as when myself, my cousin and our friends were running riot in the area.

Here is a contender, but you will need to have some transport.
Having been there, I would share the general tenet of the views

If you're lookin for some good beer and food then theres a really nice one near Capel called the Royal Oak. The other side of Reigate is the Jolly Farmer which has a new menu and is looking pretty good with a lot of organic and local produce.
Also if you're looking for a nice meal and surroundings then the closest one would be the Langshott Manor which has a brilliant new menu and the service is spot on.
If you want to take a trip into Dorking for a look around as well there is a great little place called 2 to 4 which now has the head chef from Toby Tobins Dining Room.
If you want any other suggestions pls just PM me.

Ok, so I haven't lived in the area for the last 2 years but I would recommend The Wiremill in Lingfield which serves really good food and has a nice setting. It's very close to the huge Mormom temple on the A22 which is worth a look at itself.
