So I guess HM government just thinks that people will keep flying to the UK regardless of how much they have to pay.

After the stupidity they announced during today's Pre-Budget? Right-o.

I forgot how simple it was to change VAT for businesses, takes seconds surely. Right. Piss-up, brewery.

Jesus H. Christ. That's just outrageous.

The economy is in freefall, so the answer is to kick the traveller in the balls. Is this actually a ploy to stop people spending any money abroad, at the same time screwing up our tourist industry.

Crazy, simply crazy.

Thanks,

Noticed they closed the old Concorde\MaxJet clause too of lowest class by putting hte 40' pitch caveat in.

Maybe we don't need the tourist money anymore. Well given that the pound is worth the square root of f**k all nowadays against foreign currencies, maybe peeps won't be travelling as much as before.

You can see the 'it's penalising those who pollute the environment more' angle.

Well, it really is getting to the point where unless I have to go to a funeral, I/we will not be traveling to the UK on our holidays, the UK really does seem to want to price itself out of the tourist business.

Scrooge shower rule #1 comes into play....

What is the seat pitch on the UCS ?

Was thinking just that...

Given that the back of the seat in front is LITERALLY 'in my face', lower APD, SURELY???

OOOOOH - interesting:

quote:9. Distances are based on the distance between London and the capital city
of the destination country/territory.
So, ALL of the USA (from London) is classed as 'to DC', right??? [:w]

And Vancouver seems somewhat CLOSER than it really is, in APD terms.... [;)]

Exactly my dear Preiffer, while the seat length maybe 79.5 inches, I have this strange feeling that the seat pitch is around 38 inches, so everything should go in the lower rate ????

Absolutely outrageous - especially the effect on PE fares to India, Hong Kong etc. Anyone managing a corporate travel budget will be looking at the effect of this and considering non-UK airlines I bet ...

I suspect this will make it cheaper to do a short haul to Amsterdam or Paris then fly from there.

I wonder whether VS still have any plans to fly from any Euro capitals...?

well AMS has a similar issue, it's just getting to the point where I can fly to Cancun, stay in a nice hotel, eat and drink for the same cost as the surcharges and fees when flying to the UK.

Well, that's going to pretty much kill any cheap flights to Aus / NZ. Looks like I might have to consider flying out of AMS, FRA or other places.

Just remember this when the elections come up people. And remember the 0.5% increase in NI

I travel through LHR because I love VS, but the 150 pp in 2010 to get to SA is huge. My parents who live in the UK (and a major reason to fly through LHR) can't afford to go anywhere thanks to Brown's brilliant plan to destroy the private pensions they'd spent their lives accumulating, but it's okay because he achieved social justice.

I'm not going to decide my vote based on holiday destinations. The ''killing of cheap fares' is predicted every six months, and it never happens.

Well, you could also remember which administration introduced APD ... oops that'll be the Tories then [}:)]. Oh, and didn't the Tories also recently propose to introduce APD on domestic flights as part of their oh so wonderful 'green Cameron' initiative?

Increase in NI, increase in taxes, reduction of tax free allowance, etc. now that's a different matter [V].

Let's not turn this into a political debate please, as we all know when it comes to screwing the general public politicians no matter what party or for that matter what country have turned it into an art form.

This measure will hurt the long haul leisure industry for sure, however in reality the domestic feed will not be that badly hurt, however the US - UK feed will be hurt due to the expensive nature of the UK to start with and the dollar to pound rate.

I just cannot get my head around a government throwing more taxes at a consumer that having problems to start with, a great way to stifle a stagnant economy is to increase taxation, I am of course referring to the whole budget, not just the APD.
