Screwfix are no longer taking Amex, Come on Amex and Virgin sort it out. Everyday there are less and less places you can use your card [V][V][:?]

I noticed this a while ago, as the previous catlaogue I had listed AmEx but the stores were no longer taking the card last year. Now the updated catalogue no longer lists AmEx as a FOP. Interesting as ScrewFix is part of Kingfisher that own B&Q....

I can understand it from a retailers point of view. The fee for accepting amex is more than visa or mastercard. However I have two amex cards and no other credit cards for this reason - fewer places accept it and therefore I have less temptation to use it and get into debt!

somne retailers are inconsistent though.
I get a regular box of choccy from Hotel Chocolat and they happily take Amex for that but in their stores they don't.
still the fabulousness of the choccy makes up for the loss of miles !

Very true - I found it a little strange that Hotel Chocolat didn't accept AmEx given it's brand and target market as such.
My favourite though is a bar in Reading which I visited a couple of years ago for a work event, that had a cocktail called the Black AmEx (some horrendously silly cocktail at ~200), the irony when I tried to buy a round with my card and they told me that they don't accept AmEx. [:?]

Its interesting ... AmEx seem to be doing well at encouraging companies to use their cards for branded purposes (Virgin Atlantic etc). If they could just encourage more stores to take the card then everyone would be happy - though is there really much benefit to the store? Most people with AmEx would have another card they'd have to pay with.

I do have another card but like many I much prefer to use my Amex to collect the miles and every little helps !
It does appear to be down to the commission the cred card companies charges retailers - and especially small retailers. One told me that the reason why he didn't take Amex was that they wanted to charge him 7% commission.
It also bugs me (and I know this is slightly off topic and has probably been covered already) that VS charges a 1% CC fee but Expedia dosen't for the identical fare.

We spotted this yesterday at BandQ. I was thinking of giving some feedback, as it was a right pain. Good job I had a backup card with me.
A taxi company I use, prefer Amex, as their charges are less than Visa/Mastercard.
