Good morning all!

I am taking the Mrs and kids to New York for the October half term and need advice on a good place to stay. We're going to be spending Thursday night on Broadway (seeing Wicked) and the girls will be conducting some advanced retail therapy on Friday!

The budget is not unlimited but I don't want a cheap place in a dodgy area. I'm a member of the Marriott, Starwood and Hilton rewards groups and of course I can find hotels in the area by searching online - but as I have never been to New York before any advice would be most welcome.

There is the usual good offer that SPG have on this page, that gives free nights, depending on how long your stay is, and then also on what day you arrive, just read the T&C's for each offer.

The Westin Times Square (usually part of the above offer) is a nice hotel, well located to for a first time visit and close to Broadway. We often stay at the Renaissance Times Square, which is a Marriott hotel. The Hilton hotels in NYC aren't the best, apart from maybe the ones in the business district, which location wise isn't great, so I would avoid then.

One thing to check, once you have decided on a hotel, have a look at sites like Travel Republic, my parents got a great rate at the Renaissance when the go in a few weeks, saving a couple of hundred 's off the best available direct with the hotel!

Many of my colleagues in the military (like you) stay at The Embassy Suites as the Govt rate can be excellent value (as well as all the perks that Embassy Suites comes with e.g. two room suite, free breakfast and 'cocktail hour'). I too have stayed one night there.

Although it is near Battery Park - many of the rooms have direct views of The Hudson and Statue of liberty and there is a huge movie complex connected too. An ideal base for shopping in Century 21 they tell me too !

Do it quickly though. Sunday 1st is the NY Marathon and hotels tend to start filling up the few days before.

Have you looked at the Hilton Garden Inn Times Square? Good location for Broadway and gets good reviews on TA.

Also, if you are an AA member, you can get AAA discounts at Marriott, Hilton, etc. I joined through quidco for 10 and saved $150 on my Boston hotel.

We're taking our first UC flight that day and would be more than happy to have hosted that day but we're on VS01 and not leaving until 15:45; I doubt we'll be at LHR much before 11:00 so I don't think it'll work. If plans change I'll let you know.

Please don't bank on being able to pay for entry into the CH at check-in. There was a trial for this. As you are travelling during 1/2 term I would imagine flights would be busy and so would the CH with UC tickets holders.

If the ladies in your life are shopping in either Macy's or Bloomingdales go (with passports) to their respective visitor centres and pick up 11% discount cards which cover most things (except perfume) including sale items.

Sound advice Tonty - I've just called FC and they confirmed it owuld be down to the staff on the day. I'll see what magic I can perform....! (or at least sweet talk the nice check in / CH staff....)

Thanks all for the advice; I managed to get a deal through Expedia for the W Times Square at 850 for two nights, for a 'fantastic suite' which will sleep the four of us. This was about 150 cheaper than going through the hotel direct. I'll send in a full TR!

Have a check with hotels.com found them cheaper for my trip in NYC than Expedia AND going through VA shopper, you can get 4x miles on money spend [y], Expedia is 2x
