I kid you not, I just received this email.

Hello

As you may of heard, National Express will no longer be operating the East Coast mainline train service from 23:59 on Friday 13 November...

As. You. May. Of. Heard. Of? OF?

The email then attempts to persude me to travel on National Express Coaches instead, the gist being that you may of [:p] had to stand on our trains, but you won't on our coaches and please can we email stuff about coaches to you.

Goodbye National Express East Coast.

This passenger will not miss you.

Oooooooh, one of my pet peeves - the use of 'of' instead of 'have'

Is spelling and grammar taught in schools any more?

Looking on forums elsewhere, it would appear that National Express were looking to cut costs across all areas of the East Coast franchises without resorting to cutting services.

When National Express won the franchise it was based on high growth, but this was before the recession and when it became clear how bad the recession was, NatEx didn't stand a chance of achieving the targets they promised in the franchise bid. NatEx wasn't prepared to plough money from the group into the one franchise and it was losing money, so they had no choice but to hand it back.

Lord Adonis, quite rightly, is fuming because it was clearly the loss-making franchise out of the three NatEx had, and feels that they should give up Anglia and c2c. That said, both parties seem to accept that it was out of NatEx's hands.

At this moment in time, and to be pacific about it, no, I don't think grammar and spelling are taught anymore...
