Star Alliance Member (NH & US) New Cabin Launches

Hi folks,

There's been a couple of new cabin launches happening among the *A members. Hot on the heels of the new CO J seats, US have converted their first A330 Envoy (J) cabin:

Article over on A.net

Sure, it's a very typical US carrier cabin, quite conservative in it's decor.

But I like the idea that they flipped the 'herringbone' around, so that you can actually see out of the window from the window seats without cricking your neck, while the middle seats are now probably much better for twosomes travelling together, and the shelf and stowage seems more accessible.

It's likely to be more resistant to bangs and knocks from aisle traffic too.

It looks like each time the herringbone concept that was seen on the UCS goes through an evolution, it gets better each time.

Over in Japan, ANA have launched their new F, J, Y+ and Y products on the new 777-300ER, with a new brand:

'Inspiration of Japan'

Not sure I like their F-suite. It's got rubbish window views because of the sidewall, and those rubbish reading lights which launched with the UCS.

Their new J cabin in a 1-2-1 staggered layout (a lot like the new DL J cabin layout), and their Y+ both look great though, and their new menu idea in Y+/Y (lots of small plates that you can mix and match) looks like an interesting idea - though it might be interesting to see how it works in reality.

The other thing ANA are trialling domestically and on some intra-asia routes is the ability of a Y pax to 'upgrade' some of their inflight service with selected J service items in advance. Sort of like SQ's 'Book The Cook', which is processed similar to a special meal, they can pay extra and get a J meal and beverage service served in the Y cabin.

Not sure how that would scale on a 300-seat Y cabin on a VS LGW 744, but it's an interesting idea, none-the-less.

More competition for VS.

I like the idea of facing the window. Why was that not adopted as the defacto standard in the first place? Possibly the location of the table to facilitate easier service?

IMO the 'wood' is awful.

A lot of people on a.net have said the same.

For some reason, the wood in the US cabin looks cheap and out of place, yet in other cabins like Swiss or SAS, it looks like it belongs there.

I think it's the colour of the veneer or laminate they have used, with the grey and the blue. 1970's office building chic!

I really like the New ANA J config, my only thought is that when laying flat you will wake up with some ones feet 8 inches from your facenose[:?]

Just thinking about it again, one other thing which struck me - by changing the angle of the seat so that it faces more 'forwards' than 'sideways', US have managed to get 4-across in an Airbus wide-body, and as a result, it looks less like a 'factory farm' of business travellers. [}:)]

The NH J cabin setup looks like a custom trim variant of the Thompson Vantage seat, which is the same J seat that's flying in the new Swiss A330-300, and in and out of Heathrow on DL's 767-400s.

The DL service out of LHR is now 100% guaranteed on the 767-400 with their new J product, an industry colleague flew on it to Detroit and she said it was amazingly comfortable, felt very spacious, and easy to get some sleep in.

Well it's a step up from what US offered before, though saying that the first row of Envoy was a pretty nice place to be.

The wood, very IKEA, no need to add to that.

The design of the US cabin looks good however the colour scheme looks very clinical and boring - I wonder if they have mood lighting?

Steady on, Tink! We're talking about a US carrier here, not Air Canada (who do have nice mood lighting on the longhaul fleet)! [;)]
