Dean Street Townhouse, London: A Short Review

We're just back from a excellent treat weekend down in London, taking in 'Cat On A Hot Tin Roof' and a meal at Roast. We stayed overnight at the Dean Street Townhouse, and have to say it was a great experience.

Just a few yards from Soho Square, with a restaurant and bar attached, I'd seen it reviewed in the Times and the Guardian and thought it sounded fun. It didn't disappoint.

Housed in a Georgian building, old style club library chic, warm dark woods and sofas / squishy chairs is the format for the reception. I knew I was destined to like it when I was asked to put in a request for a newspaper and was told - 'unless it's the Observer; that's our standard Sunday paper.' When the newspaper came the next morning, it was delivered in a canvas bag.

There are 39 rooms which are classified by size - Tiny / Small / Medium / Bigger; I think our room was of the Tiny variety. This meant that there wasn't really room to fit the cat in with us, never mind swing it, as the bedroom was basically the size of the bed plus a couple of feet all the way round. No wardrobe space, just (wooden) hangers on a coat hook, but as we were just there the one night, this was no problem.

OK, so small and no view but, as they say, perfectly formed. Bedside cabinets containing mini bar (complimentary still and sparkling water) and hairdryer and straighteners. Atop one of the cabinets and iPod speaker dock, the other a Roberts DAB radio. Huge flat screen TV with some level of Sky subscription built into the wall. Tea and (ground) coffee, and fresh milk in the minibar.

The bathroom had the usuals, no bath but a large walk in shower (big enough for two). Four Cowshed variants for body washing, two for hair. At the sink, Cowshed moisturers plus deodorant spray, toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, razor, comb, earplugs, razor and tampon (can I say that on a Sunday?). All except the deodorant mouthwash in an individual stylish white canvas with the contents marked. Kind of like a VS amenity kit could be? I understand the amenties are there on the basis that you could roll out of your meeja meeting and stay the night without needing to be carrying any kind of toiletries.

Only the placing of wine and peanuts alongside the tea and coffee struck an off tone, as there is nothing to say the latter are complimetary and the former are not. Oh, and we couldn't get into the bar (which is physically separate from the hotel, as they couldn't get permission to knock through) as it was 'too busy'. We'd planned to take breakfast, but abandoned the idea as the previous evening's dinner was still

Somehow I managed to get this for....95. I've just been trawling for other dates when I know we'll be at the theatre, and nothing quite that cheap has come up for the date I've plugged in, but it was a non refundable rate. Maybe I was just lucky....worth a look though...

This place is getting a lot of good reviews. Almost a shame I don't need a hotel in London! [:D]

It looks lovely. I like the 'run of the house' option where you pay a basic price with the chance of the best available on the day.
