V-Flyer

Hello ladies and gentleman,

Long time no post. My bad.

I'm back though. With a question.

I'm flying to New Zealand shortly, and was wondering, if you were me who would you fly with? Air New Zealand or Singapore? I was thinking Virgin but my only option is to go via Sydney, and ideally I want to go direct as I'll be paying excess luggage so don't want to have to pay that twice.

Any thoughts, much appreciated.

Which cabin ?

Probably going to be looking at Y, or PE if I can convince them to pay for that... decided I'd prefer a nicer hotel for the month rather than luxury for a few hours

Oooh, hard choice, but I'd say if PE -then NZ, if Y--Singapore.

That's what I would say as well, thoug NZ is supposed to be getting new seats in it's longhaul Y cabin soon.

I'm right in assuming if I'm flying Y with Singapore on a flexi ticket, I still can't upgrade myself using any Virgin miles, but will get tier points on the flight?

Both Air NZ and SIA offer a decent Y class service and product, both superior to VS. Premium Economy on Air NZ is okay on the B744, less so on the B777 where the seating configuration is exactly the same as normal Y, only increased seat pitch. I would say fly Air NZ in PE if only for the generous baggage allowance of 64kg via LAX. Flying via HKG is easier and much nicer to transit than LAX but you will only get a 30kg allowance.

If you choose SIA you won't go wrong but baggage allowance is a paltry 20kg in Y.

You cannot use Flying Club miles to upgrade any SIA flights but Flexi and Flexi Saver fares will at least earn you 100% Flying Club mileage, same as Air NZ PE fares.
