Following the inking of the BA / Iberia deal today, another 'super airline' could be on the way.

As NH said very interesting i wonder if us airways would leave star alliance or would united join under the new merger, it would give excellent options indeed.

Isn't United a Star Alliance member already? ?|

Both airlines are *A members already, UA was one of the founding *A members, US joined some time later. This is not the first time that US and UA have attempted to tie the knot, it's probably about the third.

To a large extent, their networks are complementary too.

Be interesting to see what happens, though what I think we're heading for is US merging into UA, then CO absorbing the merged US and UA to make an airline to rival Delta.

Of course, the only people that are guaranteed to gain any benefit out of this are the M&A Lawyers. ):

US Airways became a FC member following its merger with America West which was VS's partner

Two crap airlines come together, wooeee, that's gonna make me switch my US domestic flights from CO or VX ... not!

There are interesting comments over on A.net. The airlines don't really seem that complimentary to each other in terms of routes and hub operations, their networks are very East coast based around IAD, CLT, DCA, PHL etc. and then of course DEN and SFO. And likely will face DOJ action in some places where they'd become very dominant, e.g. around Washington.
