Given the opportunity exists to receive an upgrade to exec room at check (subject to availability).
How likely is this to occur? is it a VS style incentive full of caveats ): or have you found them to honour this fairly routinely?
Also assumption is if choice between std or dlx room, the std room makes more economic sense given the "exec upgrade" that hopefully/may occur?
(relates to thoughts on Hilton Tokyo)

I've used Hilton and Starwood and have either gold or platinum status with both and every time I have been upgraded.
With Hilton, the best way to guarantee it is to book online through the Hilton website, then check-in online 24 hours before and it will offer you the upgrade there and then for free!

Hitherto, I have found Hilton to honour the promise, more often than not.
I agree with Captain Page and have found that when I book through the Hilton Website, the upgrade normally follows
Good Luck

I have generally had a very high success rate as a Gold to be upgraded to an Exec room/floor. I think the only times I haven't been upgraded were occasions when the hotel didn't have an exec floor, like the Hilton Caledonian in Edinburgh. I found Hilton to be better than Marriott in this respect. I book most of my stays for work and usually book the cheapest room type available so its great to repeatedly get a bump to the Exec floor.

I find the Marriott Gold Upgrade happens almost all the time. If they cannot get me onto an Exec floor, I still get access to the Lounge etc.
I think the Hotels are better at recognising loyalty than the airlines.
