has anyone ever worked out whether its actually any quicker using flight connections rather than simply walking between terminals?

Between T1 & T3, by the time you've walked all the way to flight connections, waited for the bus to take you all around the perimiter & then had to queue at security which is always under-staffed, i reckon its just as quick to exit through arrivals, walk through the underground & re-check in at departures

Have never had to do this but I understand that at times it is 6 of one and 1/2 dozen of the other and depends on all sorts of factors.

My understanding is that if you have bought Duty Free over the 100ml limit then you have to go via connections otherwise main security will relieve you of it (even if it is still in its sealed bag)

I think you will get relieved of Duty Free either way. Through flight connections you have to clear security just like you would coming from outside, you just skip the immigration lines.

It largely depends on how tardy immigration lines are. If you found yourself in a very long queue to have your passport checked you probably would wish you had gone through connections. If you are connecting to VS UC then security in T3 will be a breeze, so provided immigration in T1 is not murderous I would go landside. If i wasn't flying UC and not a smoker I'd probably do flight connections :)

I am of the view that it is quicker to walk between T1 and T3 even today when the lines at Immigration in T3 were humungously long thanks to a large party of Spanish schoolkids in the EU line. It really doesn't take that long to walk between the two - I think it took me just over 5 minutes this morning which is roughly the length of the bus journey between the two terminals.

On occasion I have gone to Flight Connections to find the queue for buses horrendous and have had to wait for two or three buses to go before getting one. On that occasion it was definitely quicker to walk
