You now get free European travel insurance instead.

Nice bit of marketing spin there. The Credit card credit card continues to offer free use abroad within the VISA European region and a 1% charge worldwide.

Maybe it's now better to get money here for smaller amounts. ?|

I read about this in the Guardian on saturday.

That article said the aim was to reward their regular customers who actually use this account on a regular basis i.e. pay salary into it etc and discourage those that only used it for the free money withdrawals i.e. opny topped it up when they went on holiday.

The travel insurance is restricted to the account holders and not to their kids etc but I guess it would suit some people.

I saw this, and for me it totally sucks, although I will have until November to get money relatively cheaply over to the US, which should just about be good enough.

If they wanted to reward people - why don't they just charge people who don't pay their salary in to maintain the account ...

Good point Crispin. I'd much rather they charged people say £10 a month if they don't pay in £1000 or something, or have different levels of bank account with different benefits maybe.

I'll use my credit card for most purchases abroad, but it was very handy to get cash out when popping away for a weekend in Europe with the debit card.

Thanks locutus for the information!

Will be interesting to see how much it will cost to upgrade to worldwide cover...

On the upside least the £ is rising...

Also I'm sure the insurance is all encompassing with very little small print...................

Quite possibly one of the worst marketing campaigns ever.

Glad to see RM has not deserted the ship - not seen around for a while!

Citi will probably do quite well over this for US accounts.

Even Citigold only requires using them for a £25k investment then gives worldwide family cover but only 30days at a time.
