I'm sure we'll see this happen again and again!
To be fair, the students should have known what they were getting themselves in for! You can't expect to pay very cheap fares and still get all the benefits, it's not how it works!
Ryanair may have some unreasonable charges, but on the whole, they make it pretty clear at booking what you will be charged for things like excess baggage etc.

This is timely as Dragonbaby is off on a field trip to Malta (with Easyjet) next week as part of her course, and I've had to remind her of the limited allowance baggage (both hold and hand) that she has .She (like me) has never been able to subscribe to the concept of travelling light

The trouble with the LCCs is that often the total cost of the fares are not cheap :0 .
