Firstly, Is it worth having a sub forum for destination hotels/eateries etc.. (like on ye-olde-vflyer)..

Anyhow, I maybe able to escape into NYC for couple/three nights in April sans mini ^) However will no doubt involve me being a shopping widow.. ][|) We've done NY good few times, so its not a first visit..

Have been pricing up the usual suspects (hilton/SPG etc) but realise some special little haunts have been discussed on here before..(tried searching but failed...)
Prefer nothing too extreme in cost, but in same token interested to hear about a "hidden gem"...

Stating the obvious, and I know you have said you have tried SPG, but have you tried with the SPG offers, they are usually, 20% off two night, buy 2 get 3rd free, buy 3 get 4th free etc etc. IIRC the promo code is Z2H/Z3H/Z4H depending on the number of nights, but a quick search on the SPG forums on FT will confirm that.

I would have also suggested the London NYC, rates can be from $279 per night, but April they are looking more the $340 per night, nice hotel, well located and good sizes rooms for NYC standards.

Also, have you tried PTS? See if they have any offers on, especially if you can get an FHR rate for the added benefits.

When we were in NYC last year we stayed at The Royalton in 44th St,west a few mins from Times slightly cheaper than the London.You could also look at the other Morgan Hotel groups hotels.We had a meal at Ramseys joint in the London very impressed.Go onto Hotels.com they have some good offers in April-May

If you have an AA card, you get the AAA discounts at NYC hotels too, often very good especially weekend rates.

When I was there the other week I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn Tribecca. (It's on 6th Avenue and Grand) so it's right down in Soho which is perfect for all the shopping down there. It's also near the entrance to the Holland tunnel if you're flying in or out of Newark, and if JFK then it's just along Grand and you can get over the Manhattan Bridge.
It's also right next to the A, C & E (I think I've got that right!) on Canal.
The location for me & work is pretty near perfect, the rooms were of an ok size, had fridge, microwave and a coffee machine and got it for around the $120 a night mark.

I like it so much that I've booked in there for another week at the end of February.

Luke go to the hotel web site, enter your dates, click continue, then on the next screen there's a box for promo code, enter it, then click search again and you'll see the effect .

Hi Luke,Try Hotels.com they have some good offers for 3 & 4 star hotels if you cant get sorted.

Just remember to add the taxes and fees on to the qoutes prices - something like 18% will give a good indication of the final price !

In terms of value for money, not found anything yet to match the Trump Soho... I get a corporate rate of under $250 and it's a similar quality level to the Mandarin group. Plus it's almost brand new and they do seem to have frequent offers if you book direct.

Call me a picky traveller these days, but Marriott, Sheraton and the like just don't cut it...

Silly question, but do you mean the Automobile Association or American Airlines? If the former, then what do you need to do to prove membership...not sure many NYC receptionists will have heard of the UK AA! ?|

Suites are amazing, well worth the money, but I'm sure the rooms are good too.
Service is perfect.

ISTR that the AA (Automobile Association!) cards also have a tiny AAA logo on the back? I'm sure that used to be the case anyway, no longer with the AA.

We've alwys made a beeline for midtown, but starting to be tempted about other locations for a non-working visit;
thoughts on a good base (querky shopping,bars,eateries)
Soho,Chelsea, other?

Soho is or east village is where I'm always based. In terms of shopping it has everything mid town has but without the crowds of tourists.

The eateries tend to be far more 'local' and of the non-chain variety.

I 2nd that for SoHo y) Love the vibe interms of bars, restuarants and indeed shopping. Although SoHo grand has been my hotel of choice for maany years I now am feeling the neeed to try others - but same area is a must for me just dont want to do a chain.

It's odd - my work will happily pay for a business class flight for me, but hotels are very much in the medium camp! So I stay in the Holiday Inn on Lafayette, or more recently and next week in the Hilton Garden Inn tribeca.

Anyway... have you considered the Crosby Street hotel? It's part of the fimdale group, so not a chain as such. It looks lovely, and the bar is pretty cool.

When going for work I only book hotels that get our discount rate and that is usually a chain and to be honest it doesnt bother me (stayed at Embassy Suites and W on business and they are fine) but I usually go to YC for leisure and I want and need more from a hotel and restuarants, bars, shopping all more important as I will have some time free (never have time on business for a spare evening).
Not seen the Crosby before but it looks just what I like about hotels and will definately consider it - esp as it so close to one of my favourite eateries Megu !!
