What would work out cheaper. Flying from NY to Vegas or flying to LA then driving with a friend to Vegas?

It really depends when you're going!
If there are sales on the NY flight and you can get a decent price on the connection then that may work out cheaper.
Last month I flew to JFK then connected to LAS via AA worked out a few hundred cheaper!

I'd be flying early September after Labour Day

All you need to do is price up the dates you want. Work out the cost of the 2 key flights either LAX or JFK then work out the separate connections. For the NY you will need to work out the flight connection and for the LAX you will need to work out the car rental plus gas for the miles.

I'd rather walk than fly AA.

It is a simple case of you hitting the travel search engines and airline websites and then doing some research and maths on the options based on your travel dates!
The flight to LA might be cheaper than the one to Vegas but what if you factor in the cost of the car hire (and possible one way hire fees)? What about the extra time involved - surely that has a cost too and double that for your friend?
What about NY to SFO then Vegas? or via ORD?
It might be cheaper to fly from JFK than EWR or LGA but not if you have to factor in a taxi fare or transfer from where you land in the US to a possible other NY airport (you ust said NY).
Sorry to say this but you really have asked a 'how long is a piece of string' quesion and one almost impossible to answer.

Personally I would fly as far west as you can non-stop (LAX /SFO) and then either drive or fly up to Vegas. The worry of missing connections / baggage going missing (and possibly having to pay for bags) / sitting around airports waiting for connecting flights simply isn't worth it IMHO (and it's a 5 hour flight from NYC).There are no one way rental fees (should you be looking to drive one way and fly the other) with most of the car hire companies and it's an easy (albeit boring) drive from LA .
We like to have a few days on the beaches in LA before heading to sin city

I always fly to LA and then drive to Vegas. I would always allow for one night in LA on arrival as that drive after a flight was the hardest thing in the world to do - never again. After a night in LA though, it's the easiest drive in the world! 8D

I know it was a bit of a vague question but just generally wondering whether flights to LA from NY are cheaper. I'll already be in NY and have a friend in LA so was wondering whether to eet her there or drive across with her which I did last year. Connections wouldn't be a problem with regards to luggage as I'll probably just have hand luggage and ovbs car hire not an issue just petrol.

A quick check on Jet Blue shows flights JFK to LAS starting at $149 one way in September and the same JFK to LGB, which is no surprise at there isn't much in the distances. So if your friend is driving from LA anyway there's nothing in it either way, apart from keeping her company on the drive.
