I have just booked a flight on Alaska Air and when I checked the hand baggage guidelines I found that I can carry on "Service Animals, including properly documented emotional support animals". What is even better is that that they don't count towards my carry on limit.

Does anyone have an emotional support tiger, lion, meerkat or bushbaby I could borrow for a week at the end of the month? Must be properly documented and house-trained

I can't think of anything worse and I dread travelling internally in the US for fear of sitting anywhere near an animal in the confined space of an aircraft. :$ :$ :$

If your flying Alaska then a Grizzly Bear would be more appropriate.

Or Sarah Palin though I'm not sure she's house trained.

I get the same feeling about badly behaved/poorly parented children and some adults...

If you have time (i'm looking but can't find it) try searching for Czech airlines and ADA dog, the basic story is that Czech decided that on a flight to JFK they didn't have to cater to a guide dog, the Federal Government was more than happy to fine them 6 figures for this.

I had a quick look at the Czech Air site and they are quite specific about the species and their class of travel :0 :

Airlines vary on their rules in this space. I did an intensive bit of research a few years ago when we were considering relocating to the US. I have a rescue cat who has some psychological issues so I couldnt put her in the hold and I investigated which airlines allow cabin animals. Many of the European airlines are quite accomodating. As Scrooge points out, most airlines only allow a small number of pets per flight and the pets are not supposed to leave their crate, though I have read reports of owners in J sneaking little Timmy out of his crate and under the snuggly blankets in their sleeper beds.

In the US for domestic flights a lot of airlines allow cabin animals and I have seen lots of small dogs at the airport. I am sure plenty of people have managed to get a note from their doctor to say that they cannot possibly be without little Timmy for extended periods of time and so can get the pet to travel with them whereever they go.

I guess you have to be a pet person. I miss my cat whenever we are away and I would love to be able to taker her with me on trips. I know some people do not like animals on planes but then I dont like most people that I have to travel with in a public space and would much prefer to be seated next to a dog than a balding businessman

I have a 120 pound French Mastiff who is training to be a therapy dog-does that count ?? M ind you he will only fly UC as he insists on lounge access

I love animals, and if I had a cat or dog would hate for it to travel in the hold.
But from a selfish point of view, I'm allergic to cats and would have a horrible time if I was near a cat on a transatlantic flight!

On my LX flight Boston to zurich last November there was a small dog in the business cabin in a cage. It was very quiet and stayed in the box and was no bother. It was deffo a pet though. I think LX also have specific seats where pax with pets have to sit in as well

I would love to take my boys (2 rescue cats called Jess & Milo) on holiday with me, I miss them when we go away and always stress about them.

We always have conversations about what they would get up to if they were with us :0 :0

I'd rather travel on a aircraft full or cats and dogs than children thats just my choice though.

On a jet blue flight to Boston from MCO I travelled with 3 dogs in the first 2 rows. Two were in carry cages but the third was huge and was just on a lead and didn't keep still for the entire flight. It was in the row in front of me and seemed to have its own seat that it kept climbing on and off when it wan't wandering into the aisle :0 If it was a service dog I couldn't see why as the guy it was with looked fit and healthy to me.

A couple of weeks ago I was sitting in the terminal in Murcia - saw 4 dogs and 6 cats all carried on to one aircraft by different pax.
Could have been a fun flight!

Big dog eh.

What about a 300 lb pig as a service animal?

Apologies for being off topic but we had an A list patient once who demanded her handbag went with her into theatre. We humoured her but in the middle of the op it started to move across the room - we realised too late that that her dog was in it!

8kg isn't much. I have a cat that would be tipping the scales, never mind the weight of the crate which could be substantial if of wood construction.

I wonder what you're supposed to do when your pet wants to make toilet during the flight?

I wish I knew how to post pics! I have a fab picture that a friend of mine posted on Facebook a few months back from a US domestic flight.

The dog had it's own seat and sat tall so you could see the two ears!

I think it would be fine having pets on board, in limited numbers.

Click on the Post a Reply button and scroll down. Underneath the dialogue box where you post the reply and the Preview/Submit buttons there is a tab which says Upload Attachment. Click on that and Robert is your father's brother! |:)

Just flew with KLM on my summer holiday and our little pooch (miniature dacshund) was able to travel in an approved cabin bag.

Much prefer that to him being in the hold. With KLM they need to be under 6kgs and fit into the approved bags. Flight was only 2.5 hours and said pooch was well behaved, no toilets and no noise - wouldnt have known he was onboard!

If your pet cant last more than 4 or 5 hours with out the loo (not even what they do overnight) then I suggest travelling on a plane with them is not suitable.
