Not just VS then !

A pilot has been suspended after an expletive-laden rant about his flight crew was inadvertently broadcast over the entire Texas airspace: he'd failed to realise his microphone was still on.

Having never been on a flight deck I am not in a position to judge the social attitudes that may be found there.

Is there an evidence base for homophobia amongst flight crew?

The rant was not exclusively homophobic.

Not excusable but understandable given some of the pressures on flight crew nowadays. I'd rather they relieve that pressure verbally. Just think of how others vent when they are driving cars - but of course in that situation you don't have microphone and recorders picking up every word.

I liked air traffic control's contribution, that bit made me laugh just a little bit.

Based on this recording yes!

Anecdotally I hear it often from friends who are crew (not VS I might add!)

You make some good points there Bill - the crew are under a lot of pressure and to be honest, I have an excellent opinion of most flight crew. Generally they are very friendly and have that authority about them that people love! Much like members of the armed forces and people have a lot of respect for them!

However, homophobia is never excusable - but I'm sure they will have enough to deal with following this recording!

Plenty of ATC clips can be found here including the full version of the above - caution - not for the prude!

You do have to register to gain access but it is free.
