Overnight at Newark

Hey Folks - a spot of advice would be gratefully received! We're arriving on the VS17 in to EWR at 11.25pm, and looking to head down to Tampa or Sarasota the next morning.

Continental have a flight EWR-TPA at 6.30am B) and nothing after that until the afternoon, so we'd be looking at a hotel as near as possible to the terminal at Newark. It seems that the Marriot is the best bet for location unless anyone has any other tips?

Other option is to head to JFK for a 7.55am JetBlue flight, or LGA for a 7.30am DL flight. Thinking given our late arrival time these could be rather a lot of hassle!

As always, V-Flyer advice is very appreciated :)

Marriott is a good choice, 24 hr shuttle and close to the airport.

I stayed at both the Crowne Plaza and the Hilton Newark Airport (not to be confused with the Hilton in Newark itself). Of the two I would definitely stay at the Hilton again. The Crowne Plaza was a bit bleak but I enjoyed the Hilton and it was quick and easy access by shuttle to the airport.

Marriott across the car park is the best choice - a shuttle is provided but you will probably find it easier to walk across the car park out of Terminal B - stayed a few times and always good.

Another vote for the Marriot here. So close to the terminal and very comfortable.

Another vote from me for the Marriott. We walked across the car park last time - didn't even need a shuttle

Thanks folks, the Marriot it looks to be then!

Would you definitely suggest sticking with EWR and CO the next morning as opposed to going to JFK to catch JetBlue?

Well unless you fancy a long journey between the the in rush hour ...

It's at least 30 miles between the two.

It really depends on your preference, I think both have their benefits.

If you fly into EWR, you get in late which means it's straight across the car park to the Marriott and very easy to get back in the morning.

If you fly into JFK, again, very easy to stay at a hotel onsite and take the JB flight the next day.

As Tonty says, I wouldn't bother with the hassle of getting from EWR to JFK for a JB connection, although it will be quiet at night if you're coming in on the 17, it will still cost $$$.

Hi Clarkeystnfc

You seem to be developing a bit of an obsession with Jetblue :P .

I know they have got good press on here lately, but they aren't THAT good you should go out of your way to fly them IMHO. To take the JFK flight you would have to be up even earlier, pay for the transfer, probably stress out in the traffic.

I would consider going our of my way to fly VX because they are head and shoulders above the rest. Jetblue get good press in my opinion because many of the US domestic carriers are so bad. My last flight with them LGB/LAS/LGB was 45 mins late departing/arriving in each direction, and the crew on the way back weren't anything like as engaging as usual. On the return we were held on the tarmac for about an hour due to an emergency in the terminal - not B6's fault but shows that you can have a poor overall experience with any carrier. The smell from the loo was a bit ripe too :$ No trademark blue crisps either for the Daught.

You will probably not be in your room at the hotel before midnight unless you are really lucky, so just make things easy for yourself the next day.

I agree with Redvee - if I flew into JFK then Jet Blue would be my preferred choice, but not worth the minimum 1 hr journey to get there for an early check in.

Thanks folks.

RedVee - it's more of an obsession with avoiding 'legacy' US carriers if possible, because every time I've used them they've been awful.

That said, in this instance arriving on the VS17, sleep in the Marriot and then the 6.30 Continental (United) flight to TPA the next morning sounds the best bet.

Have booked the Marriott at Newark, £75 for the night seems a decent price for the convenient location.

I have done this exact journey about 18 months ago .the time span between flights is a lot less , IF you land on time ,by the time you clear immigration and customs it could be closer to 1am.
THEN you will need to be checking in for the flight (mine was 6am) around 5.

this means you could get less than 4 hours in a hotel. i decided it wasnt worth it, so found a 24 hour vendor got a drink and a snack, stuck my feet on my suitcase and dozed for 4 hours. had a freshen up and checked in.
you could also (if you have PP) use the continental lounge for a shower before flying

IMO paying for a hotel is a bit of a waste

I think I'll go for the least hassle option which is crashing out in a hotel, and then the 6.30 CO flight to TPA.

Sure, we'll probably be pretty zonked when we get there, but at least we'll be there at 9.10am and have a condo to snooze in later in the afternoon if needed.

So the flight to TPA is at 6:30am? What time would you check in for it and then how long would you give yourself to get from the hotel to the terminal?

Given the fact that by the time you clear immigration and customs in EWR it could be easily past midnight (I have flown on the VS17 so many times) I am asking myself if paying for a hotel is a waste of money given the fact that you will be in there for only 3-4 hours by the sounds of it.

Correct, we're landing on the VS17. I have booked the Marriott at Newark which is walking distance from the terminal. The only flight from EWR to TPA before 2.30pm the next day is at 6.30am with CO, so check-in would be at about 5.10am for that one.

Ideally we'd have liked to fly to TPA at about 8am but the only flight at that time is from JFK, which would require us to get up at the same time as if leaving EWR on the 6.30am flight.

I don't understand where else we could spend the 5 hours or so in a safe and comfortable place in the airport to get some sleep?

I saw a couple of guys sleeping on some chairs in EWR when I checked I'm for my VS18 flight, didnt look comfortable.

I'd still get the hotel, even if it's just a few sleep and a place to shower it will b worth it, then sleep on the flight.

I think I'd go for the hotel as well for £75, be nice to stretch out and snooze even for only a few hours.

The hotel wins it for me - at least you can get your head down for a few hours...

I agree with Tinks, so clear immi by 12.30 -say you get to the hotel check in and asleep by 1.30

you will need to be up by 430 to shower, check out and get back to the airport. 3 hours sleep tops.

i was quite comfy in a chair, feet up on a suitcase, got just as much sleep and its perfectly safe.

I do have to say the Co flight down to SRQ -we had a VERY near miss.......

Reminds me of the time my Aer Lingus flight to LHR (to overnight there before connecting with the VS19 the following day) was seriously delayed and eventually diverted to Luton. We finally arrived at LHR by bus at 3:30am. I had a booking made with HHonor points at the Hilton and so took a taxi arriving there at 4am and requested a 7am call. I got up at 6am, not having slept a wink but the best part of it was the shower and being able to change my clothes

I've only ever tried to sleep at an airport once. I'd arrived at Athens International Airport at silly o'clock after a ferry to Piraeus from one of the islands followed by a loooong coach journey and then a taxi. Flight was at 8 a.m. the following morning. I thought I'd save myself some money - never again.

Already exhausted, I arrived into London on Remembrance Sunday, combination of walking, tube and finally a train back home. 48 hours door to door, with zero sleep. Not recommended!
