Posted: 10 Aug 2011, 17:50Probably makes some sense, as it reduces the chance of not getting what you'd like - if you're bothered - and those that can't be bothered can take pot luck, so to speak... Probably helps customer satisfaction too.

Posted: 11 Aug 2011, 13:46Tonty, this would be highly likely to happen to a DYKWIA in UC/business, though if you're an airline that is serious about that product, like Singapore you can probably provide something like this (free, of course), it their "book the cook" feature, while at the same time have some room to accommodate change for one of the standard on board options.
This, however, is for Y pax, so it's really a different offering completely. It's really offering Y pax a biz meal (or a biz style meal) for a charge. If someone pays 15 euros for a meal and doesn't want it, I am sure they won't get their money back, and can take their chances on anything being left over from the meal run. That said, reports on FlyerTalk about the UA offering for this (they have been trialing it on SFO-FRA and SFO_LHR, I think) have been very positive, and the money you have already spent on this is going to be a strong incentive not to toss the meal.
I just think that, for some reason, folks are pretty averse to paying for food on board. They may do it a bit on internal flights, but absolutely not on long flights. Seems to be the line in the sand against airline charges. UA have had this for well over a year now, and it's not expanding. Hard to say whether it will ever catch on.

Posted: 14 Aug 2011, 19:52I like the idea -- I fly transcon on United Airlines (in Y/coach) every now and then, and I would welcome something like this. I would prefer to sort out a meal pre-flight rather than taking my chances with the food-for-purchase on board. (Sometimes it's fine, sometimes it's awful, sometimes there's none available, etc.)
