AF447: Flight recorders uncovered

This is sobering, and I should add you may find it upsetting. On the other hand it's very interesting - there appears to have been no defect with the aircraft.

Here is a synopsis of what occurred during the course of the doomed airliner's final few minutes.

I've followed this accident since it happened on all the usual fora.

It's a totally tragic tale where, as the professionals say, all the holes in the cheese lined up.

But, the key phrase in the article is probably "and the reason may be that they believe it is impossible for them to stall the airplane".

The nail on the head - massive automation of planes is watering down the hand flying skills of pilots. In addition, increased automation means more complex, untrainable situations can arise.

This however, was a situation the pilots should have been trained for - it was avoidable.

I'm not even going to contemplate what the folks down the back were feeling as all this was going on...
