Tax free electronic goods at duty free...

I remember the days, ah, around 1999 when a visit to Dixons tax free (albeit it was in Birmingham aiport, but what the hell) was a pleasure, with 17.5% off all those electronic goods.

I know now its called by another name (Dixons travel) which basically means its not duty free, but you don't get your vat off now, I calculated that take for instance an ipad there was 1 pound less than amazon, and I assume the owners of the airports get to keep that juicy 20% minus a pound. Thats if you are going outside the EU, of course.

However, last time I flew two weeks ago, in LHR, the playstation vita plus one game was selling in HMV at 186, which according to my local HMV is about a 20% discount. Do many other places actually offer real proper duty free (vatwise) for people flying outside the EU in LHR and LGW?

It certainly does :D - as does Jo Malone (no prizes for guessing where I send my money.... :w :w ).
I'm not sure about electronic stuff - the one and only time I've bought in Dixons Travel (as an emergency as I'd left my camera behind) the camera was as expensive as the high st (ie Jessops) v( .
