SFO experts (HL if you're out there!) - please guide me to finding a suitable hotel for a four night stay in July within the following criteria - I'm going around in circles here

Budget: up to $450 per night (incl taxes)
Location: preferably Downtown - need to be in the thick of it
Room-type: preferably a two-roomed suite - no shoe-boxes - had experience of those rooms

The Palace for me - I'm quite happy with old fashioned chintz and a general feel of genteeleness .

Don't look at me - I tend to stay in Burlingame as I use SFO as a point of entry before heading off elsewhere, usually northern California )

The Serrano on the corner of Taylor and O'Farrell is good. It's close to the centre, although it is near the Tenderloin district too. Dotties True Blue cafe is very near too - the best breakfast in San Francisco, people start queuing early to get a table there but it worth it.

For what it's worth, I stayed in Parc 55 last year. They only had standard rooms left but it was all we needed. The rooms were a decent size with a great view of the city. I'm sure the suites would be excellent. The bar was very lively, although there was a conference on at the time. The location is perfect, right at the end of the cable car line.

I also have stayed on the Westin St. Francis a few times. Its location is excellent but the atmosphere wouldn't be as lively. There are two sides to the hotel, you really need to be in the new wing.

PS. Restaurant recommendation - Kokkari. Book in advance.

I have to agree with DL and recommend the Palace Hotel.

Try the Joie de Virve boutique chain. They have several down town hotels/

Sign up to their loyalty sceheme and get free wifi in the room.

The W is nice (but can be pricey) and in a reasonable location.

I also vote for The Palace. The breakfast room is incredible. However, the rooms are not huge.
You may want to try The Westin round the corner. It is a high rise so you can get some stunning views over the city.

W on their 4-for-3 offer.

Or the Hotel Vitale right on Embarcadero

Another vote for the Hotel Vitale from me. Had a wonderful stay there.

FWIW, Le Meridien has similar prices, sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less, than the Palace, and the same SPG 4-for-3 deals, and gets very positive reviews. I like the area a little better these days for the restaurants and bars in the evening, Kokkari indeed being one, but also Wayfarer, Quince & Cotogna, Coi, Cigar Bar etc etc.

Vitale is the best geographical location, tho', and just tremendous on a Saturday morning.
