Amex Platinum advice

Hi

I am almost about to apply for an Amex Platinum card and ditching my Virgin Black card. I know there have been recent discussions about this card, but any advice would be appreciated.

Also, if there are any benefits from taking a referal I would be happy to accept one.

Thanks

John

Whoops excuse the previous typos -although the benefits have changed there are ( for me anyway) some continued major benefits. The travel insurance ( particularly with hire car insurance), the CX Gold status ( which has just renewed for me despite initially being for a year) which equates to Oneworld Sapphire, the bonus promotions that are offered, the Hertz discount etc.
I have to say that the travel dept has been pretty good too :) .

If you are referred by an existing cardholder, you will get 52,000 MRs if you spend £2000 in your first three months of membership. You will also have a nice warm glow knowing you have put 25,000 MRs in your referrer's account. :) (And I'm not fishing, I've given up my Amex charge cards prior to moving to NZ)

But, if you go via Quidco at the moment, you will get 50,000 MRs plus £80 cash back. Amex are not to bad at processing the cashbacks, might need a bit of following up and the cashback is obviously not guaranteed.

£80 off the fee is quite tempting though as opposed to the extra 2000 MRs via a referral

I'm currently a Gold Amex and have been offered an upgrade to Platinum and 15,000 MRs.
Not sure if it's worth it. By their rules if I ditch the gold and wait 6 months I can apply and get 50,000 MRs

Not sure what to do - the offer is until 31st January. The £450 fee is steep but the the benefits are still good.
I still have Hilton gold which I got as a suplimnetary card holder 2 years ago on my wife's Platinum Amex (now ditched because of the fee!).
Thought Hilton was for 1 year only as well?!

Any benefit in haggling with Amex, I know they've lost a few punters since they put up the Platinum fee?

The Hilton benefit was only for a year and has now gone completely v( .
You can try haggling but don't expect too much :D .

Just resurrecting this, last week I received a Hilton HHonors Gold pack so assumed I'd been downgraded from Diamond to Gold. Must admit I'd never understood why I've been diamond for the last three years as the Amex Plat benefit is only for Gold! Anyway lo & behold I today I receive this email:

YOUR CONTINUED LOYALTY TO HILTON HHONORS™ MEANS THE WORLD TO US,

and that is why we were disappointed to learn that you may have received a membership card indicating a tier change for you in the HHonors program.

While having your HHonors card is not required to receive your Diamond level benefits, rest assured you will receive your correct card shortly. In the meantime, you can check your status at any time at HHonors.com – and know that any Points that were incorrectly awarded at the wrong tier will be corrected.

So back to Diamond I am, happy bunny! I've benefited big time from the Diamond status in recent years with fab room upgrades every time, free internet, free breakfast all of which add up cash wise.

Thanks
James
