the holiday envy is the bit I dont like. I am far far far from well off, just I save up hard for my long haul holidays (not buying coffee and croissants every day [ah those were the days lol] and making my own lunch etc. Detest having to tell my coworkers where I went on holiday.

A shame that I am only able to appreciate it behind what seems like bullet proof glass, with a view of those same pallets of stone covered in bird s?*$t and mouldy bread delivered to repave a courtyard 5 months ago.. smiling none the less.

Ah, if only I were off on a jet plane to some tropical locale .. one can dream.

The answer to the email one is simply to delete them all !

I know of a few people who set their out of office which basically says

'I will be away from X date to Y date and will delete all emails (unread) when I return. Please re-send your email after Z date when I will give it due consideration'

Not sure I would be that brave though !

Very funny indeed, but only portions of it apply to me thankfully. I have no commuting on smelly trains with ghost like people, no boss shouting at me 'cos I am the boss. I trot out of the conservatory of a morning around 9, maybe 9.30, in my shorts and flip-flops, take 3 steps across the patio into my office which looks out over our small garden with lots of little dickie birds feeding and bathing in the bird bath... sounds idyllic doesn't it?

I do have the dreaded email problem, but thankfully, my work related emails will have been checked and responded to by my assistant whilst away, and the other junk can be deleted. Holiday envy doesn't apply, and like gfonk, I'm far from wealthy but I work hard for my holidays and save up, so I spend as much as I like on them.

Nonetheless, it will take on average 2-3 weeks for me to fully catch up when I get back, depending on how jetlagged I am, and therefore, how foggy my brain is ii) and especially if I arrive back in a period when I have to visit my clients as that's usually a day out per client. I can feel like I'm in my own time zone then for sure, lol. Coming back from holiday can most certainly be stressful n(

Thankfully, I can get focused on the next one...

The holiday envy thing is interesting. I don't really care what people think very much, but find myself feeling somehow sheepish when answering the question (Oh, where did you go?

Goes a bit like,

Did you have a good holiday?
Yes, it was great thanks.
When did you get back...was it a good flight...and then...
Where did you go again?
Err, <Barbados>/<Hawaii>/<Los Angeles>/<New York?/Sydney?.....insert current last destination.

And then the killer statement:
Whaaat? Again?!

For some reason, I now start to feel a bit guilty/nervous/whatevertherightwordis....

Of course, people like our very own Slinky and others travel nearly every week for work.

Should we create our own top 10 for people who travel with work?

One amongst them must be:
"Oh, it must be fabulous to travel all over the world and see so many places" - when the truth is, you waste your own time getting to/from airports, absorbing flight delays, seeing the ijnside of taxis, hotels, conference centres and offices and not much more.

Any others?

oh just Tokyo (sheepishly)

You can then see their faces as they start to do the math lol flights to tokyo (in PE at least) must be £2k for two people, hotels for a week....hmmm a grand? omg plus spending money....

I dont buy lunch every day, nor shop heavily online or go to the pub regularly blah blah blah so I save up for my holidays. I tried to keep it secret that I am going away at christmas but it spreads once a couple of people find out.

The holiday envy is interesting. I work for a charity and quite often have had funny remarks about the destinations we have been to and even comments that I'm clearly paid too much to have exotic these holidays ?| wouldn't mind but we don't even travel in upper :0

I often want to remind people of this when they are receiving their online shopping at work and buying lunches and coffees and I'm being thrifty saving for my holiday.

And even if they don't say 'what, again?', you can see it in their faces! But I'm with you - I don't buy lunch out at work, we don't go out drinking or clubbing (probably a bit long in the tooth for clubbing, but hey, that doesn't stop a lot of people!), nor do we smoke. ot being evangelical here at all, but it's simply how you choose to spend your hard-earned dosh. And I try not to feel guilty about it ii)

Most of my coworkers could have an account at amazon judging by the amount of shopping they do.
It's true that long haul destinations are expensive even if just in PE but I think like catsilverswords also said its a choice about what you spend your cash on.
Most of my coworkers holiday in the "English" holiday resorts in the med (tongue firmly in cheek) and maybe even twice per year whereas I travel once every 12-18 months but save like crazy for the privilege.

Indeed gfonk. It doesn't make people wrong if they want to holiday in med English resorts, but not my cup of tea. Be a bit boring if we were all the same!

Also, why do a lot of people expect you do be doing huge amounts of stuff when on holiday? Again horses for courses.... Our preference is always to rent a nice (large!) property and to do what we feeli like doing, we rarely have a big plan or rushed itinerary.... and yeah, we know that wouldn't appeal to a lot of people. But hey, it's our holiday!

Once again an all too familiar situation. Mrs P and I do our best to get away as much as possible, around 3 or 4 times a year (in Y :0 ). The usual questions, the usual slightly embarrassed reply followed by the ever so boring "you go away more than I eat hot dinners" v(
It is then I then serve the killer blow:
So <insert name> how many children have you got? Isn't the estimate around £150000 per child to the age of 18 - there's part of the cost saving!

Of course how we all spend our money is down to the individual and I love travelling and will do until the money tree wilts

This gets more interesting. And those who holiday in those 'English' resorts probably go searching for egg and chips cos they can't cope with 'foreign food!' v( (hints of Shirley Valentine hehe). Late nights clubbing, a technicolour yawn on the way home, several hours roasting on the beach with copious amounts of alcohol in the mix...

I can hear myself sounding terribly snobbish, and I don't meant to, but I am a bit. It's just not for me. I like a nice hotel, a nice restaurant and a bit of culture if I can get some. I've been lucky the past 3 years to be able to travel long haul. Before then I couldn't afford it (and the other half wouldn't consider it if we could), but have enjoyed, and still enjoy, holidays in Eastern Europe, usually a long weekend city break. Apart from one holiday in Tenerife out of season, I don't think I'd consider 'club med' as holiday destinations.

I'll always look for the best deal I can find, but don't mind what I pay within reason because I work hard and save for what I want. And as someone here has already said, doesn't matter what others think. And as has been pointed out about the high cost of having children, fortunately we don't have that cost so we do have a bit more expendable income, (but not as much as some might think!).

I'll stop ranting now hehe and hope I haven't caused offence to anyone who enjoys 'club med', I know not everyone is of the beer and sex and clubbing and pass out on the beach crowd

I'm like you bretty

I don't judge those that enjoy club med - each to their own - just I prefer (like most on here) I like a good hotel and lots of culture.

And you are right, shouldn't be ashamed of saving hard.
