My point is this: with the lack of any form of meaningful gun control, any incident like this in the US is to be expected and it is only time before the next. Then the next. Then the next. While they cling to their "right to bear arms" this will just repeat ad infinitum.

Ahh the gun control debate.... perhaps they should hold people to the true spirit behind the 'right to bear arms' and allow only single shot, muzzle loading muskets on the streets... that could be amusing/tragic.
At this stage de-escalation is tricky, not impossible, but damned tricky.. It will also be a political death sentence for congress as things currently stand and I don't associate politicians with acts of such self sacrifice.
