I have a "big" birthday coming up in January. I have 90% decided on New York. I would like to stay in a nice hotel for this

I have booked 21st - 25th Jan off work. Budget really isn't an issue but don't want to spend ££s just for the sake of a "named" hotel.

I think if you put 10 VF'ers in a room and ask this question you'll get 11 different answers. We have booked again with one of the Library Hotel Collection for our trip next Easter.

I really loved my stay at the Sherry Netherlands (59th/5th). We stayed there for our honeymoon and it was absolutely brilliant. Would highly recommend for a special occasion, and I think if you make them aware they will do what they can to make it extra special, too.

Oh, and if it helps, it got a mention (and some screen time) on Mad Men!!

I love the Eventi (on 31st and 6th).

Am loving the look of the Library Hotel - its my favourite, so far.

As pjh says you'll no doubt get different answers from everyone , I've never stayed in the same one twice when I visit ,my favourites have been the One UN and the Westin Grand Central

I am in the process of arranging a "big birthday" trip to NY for May, flight booked so need to sort out hotel at some stage. I have been to NY many times, rarely stay at the same hotel as like to try new. Hotels I have used & enjoyed include

A friend stayed at the Lowes Regency last week & said it was very good.

Stayed there and enjoyed it greatly. Very civilised, with wine and cheese hour in the evening. Staff were excellent, even telling me where to go to get my glasses mended. There's an Italian restaurant in the basement, which we ate at the evening we arrived and when we were clearly flagging they suggested we take our remaining drinks and dessert up to our room rather than simply leave it on the table.

JW Marriott Essex House, used to be a Jumeirah hotel. Amazing views over CP.

We are just back from NYC and stayed in the Staybridge Suites on W40th. The beds alone are worth staying there for; the most comfortable I have ever slept in. We paid ££££'s for our bed at home, Staybridge's beat it. The staff cannot do enough for you and any request was dealt with immediately. Very easy location to get to everything as well.

Personal fave is the Westin Times Square

Depends where you want to stay but if you're happy with Lower East Side then The Hotel on Rivington is fantastic. Get a high floor king with soaking tub and you get amazing views of the manhattan skyline, floor to ceiling windows and the comfiest bed I've ever slept on. They use genuine Tempur memory foam mattresses and it was so good I bought one as soon as I got back to the UK.

We thought Ink 48 was pretty special, they'll even bring you up a goldfish if you want one in your room.

We normally stay close to Grand Central, handy for Airport Bus & Subway. Favourite 3 hotels :

Grand Hyatt

We stayed at the Mandarin Oriental New York when we visited.

Great views and amazing service, and were able to walk to Per Se without leaving the building (great for when we had to roll out!)

The Sanctuary is a lovely hotel - great rooftop bar and now a great restaurant down stairs too...

Spending fair bit of my work life in NYC I am going to pose the OP an question.
Sure many on the hotels mentions all have their merits but what does the OP want from the hotel??
I have taken family and friends to NYC in the past, the hotel, a nice one, is always mentioned but and here is the killer for me,
I have spent hundreds of thousands of my hard slept points ) with SPG and Hilton only to find the blighters are out seeing NYC for 14 hours a day, really only using the bed and shower.
If this is your case are you really only after location?? You may be able to spend yourself a small fortune, perhaps for even more shopping ): ):

We have tried many hotels but the Crowne Plaza Times Square cannot be beaten for location, everything you need is right there, we have stayed here 8 or 9 times and if is comfortable and not to pricey.
Another favorite is the Hilton on 7th but if you want something quieter there is a new boutique hotel opening every week.

Love to be downtown - the Conrad is new and swanky and the Ritz Carlton Battery Park has great views of Statue of Liberty and in room telescopes.

You have raised some very valid points and now I think about it, which is always dangerous for me, I don't really know.

I have been to NY before but it was Feb 2001 and it wasn't with my new hubby. So we will be doing all the typical "tourist" things. Will we be tired from all this and retire early in the evenings ?? We went to KL for hubbys 50th in March and made some friends and went to bed at 4am most days

Maybe I should go for something in the middle ?|
