V-Flyer

A request for two minutes of your time if, as fellow v-flyers, you have travelled and stayed in the metropolis that is The Big Apple.

A close friend, and his girlfriend, have booked themselves a week in New York in January, and will be staying close to Times Square.

It's easy to run off the standard list of things to do whilst in town so, to make the visit much more interesting, I'm setting a task for those with a couple of minutes of free time to list three of the more interesting or quirky things that they have undertaken or visited in New York (this can include shops) and three bars and three restaurants that they consider should not be missed.

That's a total of nine items; obviously there may be duplications and I have my pre-prepared list as well.

By way of reward, I'll buy a drink for anyone that contributes and is trotting along to the December social in London.

Take the trip away from Manhattan and go and see the Musuem of Moving Image. http://www.movingimage.us

Plus most of what has been said above, top of the rock is a must.

Definitely check out the Meatpacking district on a Friday or Saturday night! It's the equivalent to London's Shoreditch if that's their kind of scene...

If they love food and want to do something really out of the ordinary then I can strongly recommend Famous Fat Dave's tour, it's simply awesome!

Keep those ideas coming.

MOMI and the Meat Packing District are on the list; Famous Fat Dave's Tour might be a little outside of my friends budget, but I'm adding it to my next NYC visit!

It is recommended that if you want to visit the Memorial Museum you book in advance,

The viewing deck in One WTC is due to open in early 2015 but not sure when exactly.

Personally I'd avoid taking any boat trip over to the Statue of Liberty, the queues were often horrendous. You can gain a far better view of it, along with a whole lot else by taking one of the Circle Line Cruises. They're pretty cheap and you can get one as part of the a CityPass

I went on one of their full island cruises last year and found it quite interesting with a commentary from a guide and great views arround the Whole of Manhattan.

Agreed CHill, I took their 3 hour cruise that (almost) went the whole way round the island. It certainly didn't drag at any point and for $30 (if I remember right) it was excellent value for money.

I'm adding the cruise into the suggestion list.

Climbing up into the crown of the Statue of Liberty.
They've put in a new staircase recently but it's still a bit of a climb (DL the Elder managed the old staircase at the age of 72 ).

We did this last week and it was fantastic, if a little tough on the legs.

We got a New York Pass for around £120 each including hop on hop off bus for 3 days.

Discovery in Times Square is very good, it has the bodyworks exhibition on, very thought provoking, if not a bit gruesome !

If you going to do top of the Rock, the VIP tour is included with the NY Pass and you get an hours tour around the art and architecture in some of the buildings. Some awesome stuff that you just wouldnt notice on your own.......

Yankess stadium was also pretty godd, although it's a treck on the hop on hop off bus !
