Just started using what's app (I know, late to the party!) and wondering if I can use this in the US while having data roaming turned off? Anyone done this???

No, you need data enabled or access to a wifi connection.

Yes, you can have data roaming turned off. But if you do that, the app won't work unless you're connected to a wi-fi connection.

You can use data roaming as part of your existing contract or pay as you go plan if you're on 3, as the United States is a "Feel At Home" country. If you're not on 3, get a free 3 pay as you go SIM and then you can use 3's Feel At Home in the United States, as long as your phone is unlocked and can accept a 3 SIM.

£10 add on (All in One 10) will get you 100 minutes, 3000 texts and 500Mb of data that you can use, even in the US.

£15 add on (All in One 15) will get you 300 minutes, 3000 texts and Unlimited data (25Gb usable abroad).

That's as I thought it mit be. Staying in a house with wifi, so will try picking it up that way.

Been reading quite a bit about the 3 offer in another thread I'm with Giffgaff, and had thought about getting a 3 card, but side from watsapp, I wouldn't plan on using my phone for data in the US (would use ipad instead). The feel at home bit is attractive, but of course doesn't allow for calls to US numbers, which is a real pity.

Whilst in Florida last year, we had Whatsapp most of the time. The Disney parks wifi now, so many restaurants offered free wifi, as well as the Malls and like you say - homes. Also had the same experience in LA and Las Vegas.

Paying for Internet connection in a hotel room is becoming old fashioned now and about time too. Obviously some hotels still charge but free wifi is becoming the norm y) y)

whatsapp works US or UK no worries as long as you have wifi altho suggest you use a local wifi to avoid roaming charges--I love it!

Think that's what I'll try. I'm always wary of connecting to wifi in houses we rent, which is crazy, since I always use to connect my iPad. But I ever feel it's a risk with that, since I don't have a data contact with it. Why then should I be so wary with a phone?!

I have used Whatsapp connected to WIFI in the USA with data roaming turned off with no issues.

So what is whatsapp? Seems presumptious to assume we all know what it is...

From quick read, what would make you think a messenger over the internet would work without the internet? And don't we have facebook messenger, skype and a hundred other of these damn things, also what's the point of it if someone isn't using whatsapp the other end...

Just baffles me how sometimes how people assume we know every trendy app just because they use it...

whatsapp is a free app that allows you to message/send photos for free. It's very handy, especially for photos which most mobile phone plans don't include in the free part of their tariffs.

Yes, there are various other options, but like most things one seems to be more widely used, and certainly whatsapp is right at the top of that list. I guess it is only like assuming people know what FB or Twitter are, it's just another very popular app.

I have had whatsapp on my iphone for a number of years now.
In those days, initially I had to pay .69pence for it via AppStore but since then nothing. Obviously they only charge 'new' members an annual fee after the first 12months ii)

I don't do watsapp, I do iMessage, FaceTime etc but I'm a BT home phone user and have installed Smarttalk. Can't recommend it enough.
