Getting to Sacramento

I'm planning a couple of trips to Sacramento next year and was wondering if anyone here had any tips on how to get there. In the past I've travelled VS to SFO and then United for the short flight to SMF.

I just realised that LAX-SMF works out cheaper than SFO-SMF but for some reason I'd prefer to fly in to SFO. Am I being silly, or is there any real advantage into flying into SFO?

Does anyone have any other suggestions for getting to SMF? I'd like to fly VS to the west coast (don't really fancy a long domestic US flight).

Cheers
Neal

You can fly into LAS then Southwest it up there, pretty regular direct flights or you can go via BUR,ONT or LAX.

Saying that I would be more likey to fly to LAX then catch one of the 10 direct flights per day.

Just out of interest (and being a nosey bugger) why do you have to go to Sac Town? biz or pleasure?

Just checked and there are five direct flights on UA from LAX-SMF. Thanks for that idea - it opens up more choices for connecting flights seeing as there are two flights to LAX from LHR as opposed to the one to SFO.

Going to Sac for pleasure... my other half is studying at UC Davis. My first visit to Davis was quite weird - very London like... down to the mini Big Ben and the red buses (which we don't even have in London anymore!)

Only real advantage is on the return leg - not only does it have the "V-Flyer 2005 best CH" award winner, but even without CH access, it's actually quite a nice airport :)

Have to say that the flight option from either LAX or SFO is the best - public transport to the North Bay is pretty appalling (how about a BART extension, CalTrans?) [n]

LOVE Davis - done a lot of work with the Vet Labs there.... GREAT restaurants in town too and a fab farmers market. To be honest, I flew into SFO and hired a car - it isn't far. And the local hotel has free bikes ;)

Yea I don't really fancy farting around with trains etc... thinking flying is easiest. Not tried driving in the US yet but I don't think I'd like my first experience to be driving out of SFO!

I'd love to hear your tips for the great restaurants in Davis... the best I've been taken out to is In 'N' Out... not that I'm complaining!!!

It could be worse, at least you get a nice break out of it :D

Is quite strange really, I've driven plenty of times in the US, and not had too many problems - probably the hardest thing is remembering which side of the car to get in :D I've only driven out of SFO once (had a free rental car) - it's really not that bad to be honest (about the worst thing was having to arrive sober [:0])

Cheers
