Following a short visit outside London with several of my V-Flyer colleagues it was time to return to Los Angeles. V-Flyer Buns4vs was my willing and capable chauffeur, making the drive to LHR from bucolic Swindon in just more than one hour. I bid adieu to Buns and headed inside T3 where a sea of humanity flowed hither and yon, their luggage carts overflowing. Dazed expressions appeared on most faces and I thought, of course, it is only 8:00 oclock on Sunday morning: what fool, after all, would be dumb enough to be heading out of town at such an ungodly hour? Ahem.

After a quick check-in with a pleasant agent I was off to Virgins Clubhouse for my first look at this newly expanded oasis. Knowing that I was going to the CH that morning our founder Pete Shaw had requested that my first duty once inside be to present, on behalf of all my fellow V-Flyers, the V-Flyer 2006 Best Clubhouse Award. And so I did, and in the process there followed several introductions, exchanging of business cards (I gave the VS folks our V-Flyer card, of course), picture taking and smiles all round. Thanks, Pete, for affording me the honour of presenting the Award. The gratitude and appreciation of the Clubhouse team was tremendous.

The expanded CH is simply delightful with diverse seating areas and groupings. I plopped myself down on a comfortable divan and was quickly approached by a pleasant staff member who took my order for a full English, coffee and orange juice. The food and drinks appeared within 5-10 minutes and all tasted great. I must say that Im becoming a fan of the full English; as we say in the States, it really sticks to your ribs.

After brekkie I headed to the Cowshed spa where the same attendant whod offered me the Rhinestone Cowboy treatment (massage and shave) in January was to be my guide yet again. She provided an excellent massage, hot towels and then a close and complete shave. Tipping isnt necessary for these services as everything in the CH is complimentary, but leaving a tip was in my view not only necessary but a joy, as my attendant did her work beautifully.

Soon it was time for the trek of the ages (er, I mean the walk to gate 40) where Ruby Tuesday, a non-VPort equipped 747-400 awaited. Shortly premium boarding commenced and once on board I was escorted to my seat (yes, escorted very classy and ultra professional behavior, reminding me once again of the golden age of air travel youve heard me speak of before). Id picked seat 8K to be in the milieu, as it were; after all, this is a daytime flight and I wanted to enjoy the full UC experience.

Departure was delayed due to a mechanical issue and we were finally airborne at 1226 local time, but once in the air the service began and really never stopped. An outstanding flight crew attended us and could be seen working the cabin, greeting passengers by name (another excellent point of difference for VS and other premium carriers), offering whatever service might make the journey more pleasant. I began with a Bloody Mary and some crisps, followed with a salmon and rocket salad (my fellow V-Flyer Nottingham Nick had explained to me the night before that good old rocket is a sort of lettuce, you see; so, I was elated in knowing that I wouldnt need to enquire of the FA excuse me, maam, but what exactly is rocket?). After rocketing it was time for rolling er, I mean dinner, and for me, that meant the chicken curry, which was excellent and piping hot. There were several desserts on offer and I chose SRBs fave, the rhubarb crumble complete wit ice cream. A bit of Italian sauvignon-style white wine washed all of this down most effectively.

Just then one of the FAs happened by and, noting the glassy look of my eyes, suggested that perhaps Id like a nap. Quite right, she was and, following the quick conversion of seat to bed, yours truly was in dreamland for 2-1/2 hours, after which I just lay in bed for another hour, doing absolutely nothing. This frankly is one of the great opportunities still afforded by long-distance premium air travel unobstructed rest. No cell phones, no Blackberries, no outside world.

About two hours outside of Los Angeles afternoon tea commenced with most UC pax taking advantage of the offered finger sandwiches, cakes and cheese samplers, all of which was excellent and served with proper hot tea and gracious smiles.

All too soon or so it seemed our 11 hour, 4 minutes in the air was over and the graceful 747-400 banked slowly right to line up with the northbound runway complex at LAX. We had descended first over the California desert near Bishop, passing over Yosemite National Park and the Imperial Valley (Americas agricultural lettuce bowl) before turning toward the ocean, following it south from Santa Barbara to Malibu where we again made landfall to begin our final approach. LAX was not busy and we taxied quickly to Terminal 2 where we bid our goodbyes and appreciation to our loyal crew. I will miss them and look forward to flying again with all of them. To a person they rendered particularly excellent service.

So, another two trips on VS are now complete. While all airlines and certainly VS have room for improvement, when journeys are made simpler for the passenger and those serving us offer smiles free of charge, the journey is once again an adventure of anticipation and great reward.

Thank you Chuck for a TR delivered in a writing style that flows mellifluously over the page like a well delivered prose poem. Whilst I am not empowered to represent V-Flyer - thanks from me for doing our presentation duties at LHR!

Another excellent report Chuck - I bet the Clubhouse staff were so pleased - do they put the award on display somewhere?? Well dont to you though for doing the presenting![:D]

And yeah - those VS gates are miles from everywhere arent they - usually the VS05 is parked next door so I know that trek.[:(!]

Good to see you are getting to grips with the cosmopolitan nature of our foood - I do at least know what cilantro and scallions are so I have picked up the your local lingo too[y]

What a shame you and Jacq just missed each other by a day - I am sure she would have appreciated the Clubhouse visit and a few champoos at the bar with you!![:w]

Thanks for the great TR, Chuck [y].

I THINK I agree with Decker's sentiments above, but I will just have to check my dictionary, first. [8D][:I]

Yes, it has something to do with honey. Mellifluously = Flowing like honey

Nice TR as ever. Sometimes I wish my strong suit was writing rather than technology...

Good to see VS on top form, and after all these TRs, I'm really looking forward to experiencing the expanded CH on Saturday, and seeing where they have displayed the award!

Cheers,
Mike

as others have said

#1 Flowing with sweetness or honey.
#2 Smooth and sweet

You know how certain words have antonyms? To me mellifluous would be an antonym of discordant.

Slinks off to sit in pseud's corner

Great TR once again Chuck! [oo]

Something very strange is going on here though.... Every time I read one of your TR's I attatch the voice of Dr Frasier Crane to it in my head!!! [?]

That's a good one, John! Now if I could actually know what you meant by that remark.[:0]

Thanks for the TR![y][^]

Congrats on being awarded the task of presenting the LHR CH with its rightful award (couldn't think of another word for award so I apologise for this sentence souding kind of stupid - my vocabulary is not yet adavanced as Decker's[;)][}:)])

Nothing offensive intended Chuck - in fact quite the opposite was my intention.

I enjoy reading your TR's because of the way they are written. They come across to me in an almost theatrical manner with the reader following a story rather than just a list of hard facts and opinions. Now, being a Frasier fan I can imagine him reading one out loud with 'gusto'!

Perhaps the jetlags getting to me!

John

Chuck,

An enchanting read as always! As others have commented, your narrative style is captivating, so thank-you for taking the time to compose!

Glad you had two lovely VS flights and an enjoyable short visit to the UK (bar the delights of rustic Swindon of course!).

Thanks,
Sarah

Well done Chuck, a great read as ever [y] Shame you were delayed leaving LHR and had to survive with no V.Port but it sounds like the crew more than compensated for any deficiencies in the aircraft.

Hi Chuck,

I'm so glad you enjoyed your piping hot chicken tikka masala and Rhubarb crumble with ice cream. . . as I'm the one that prepared it for you. I was working in the galley with, shall I say, a somewhat more experienced crew member, looking after you in the aisle. We both enjoyed talking to you and really appreciate a great trip report. Glad we lived up to expectations!!! Look forward to welcoming you onboard again soon.

Cheers,

Galley Boy Tom

Good one Tom - when on flights and in lounges we v-flying bunch often give out cards with the web address on and I'm sure sometimes the VS staff members think we are a little bit 'kooky' - so its really good that you took the trouble to come and say hello.[y]

Enjoy yourself here and feel free to comment as and when![:D][:D]

Yeah, good one Tom and welcome to V-Flyer!

I had a great time on the 251 with some of your colleagues last Sunday and hope they'll have a wee look on here too!

John

First of all, on behalf of a grateful online nation, thank you for presenting that award to a facility and team that has never been equaled in my experience (except, perhaps, for our dear Claire at SFO CH).

As for your flight: WHY CAN'T VS GET THIS RIGHT ALL THE TIME??? You had the textbook, perfect VS UC experience -- good for you! And so fun to read the TR, too...

Mr. Tom, our galley boy, I am pleased you are here. At the ripe age of 23, I urge you to leverage this site as a learning opportunity for yourself and your teammates -- see the power of consistent and excellent Virgin service. It will see your company thrive and give you a lifelong career path. And if you're really cute, be sure to say hello to me on June 26 VS 20 or July 7 VS 19 LOL

Cheers,

GJ

Chuck

Thank you for such an eloquent and observent TR[^][^][^]

You may have encountered 'a sea of humanity' inside T3, all I can say I would have welcomed the flotsum and jetsum of inconsiderate motorists exiting the T3 environs to have had a liberal dose of 'Mellifluously'[:D][:D]

I am extremely envious of the superb treatment you received throughout your flight and would wish to add my contratulations (an welcome of course) to Tom.

I will print your description of the appraoch to LAX so that I know what I am looking at when Mrs Buns and I next venture that way[;)]

Thanks once again

Hi, Tom!

Welcome to V-Flyer and let me say right off that not only did you live up to my expectations, but you and your fellow flight attendants completed your duties beyond my expectations. I thought that your friendliness and quiet professionalism were exactly right, 'spot on' as my British friends say.

If anyone has the good fortune of flying with Tom you will be rewarded with a warm welcome and great service.

Again, welcome aboard. Hopefully you will encourage other teammates to join us.

Best regards,
Chuck-

Cracking report, really well written - thanks Chuck [y]

'bucolic Swindon' eh? I had to look that one up, as I've never heard it described like that before [:D] That's a very flattering description mate [:)]

Cheers
